God fashioned me, when He fashioned me, for my doom,

most enamored of beauty unmarred by any flaw.

And raised my aspiration until it set out with me,

striving to reach the height of the two Farqad stars.

And I have a soul so delicate it nearly flies,

and catches up with al-Suhā and the two Shiʿrā stars.

It seeks its share in everything

whose beauty reaches perfection in the two worlds.

It tugs me toward this and that,

to enjoy the best of both.

As though I were a bān-tree branch atop a hill,

bent by winds from either side.

It sways with this one now, and now

with that—so welcome to both breezes!

    فيا لِلّهِ نفسي بينَ تَينِ

    So now I ascend to the uplands, now I descend to the lowlands;

so, God help my soul between these two!

I seek gentleness in beauty, yet encounter

    harshness of nature mingled with beauty;

and perfect goodness of character for my heart,

and well-proportioned beauty of form for my eye.

    ففكّر مُمعناً في المَعنَيينِ

    For the two are like meaning beneath a word;

so ponder deeply the two meanings.

Is not meaning a spirit in beauty's body,

by which pure gold surpasses silver?

If not, then listen to these words of mine,

and distinguish what I mean from me.

Has a tear brought doom upon a lovesick man,

as the one you know has brought my doom?

He gazed, then shot at one whose heart was sound,

with an arrow from the languor of his two eyes.

So I remained cast down where lovers fall,

felled upon my brow and both hands,

remaining where he left me prostrate,

as love turns me over with both palms.

So, if people knew the hidden truth of my plight,

they would cry: O you felled by the two eyes!

O king of beauty, you have settled in my heart,

just as Dhū Ruʿayn occupied the kingdoms.

By your glance and stature was deliberately spilled

my blood between the Indian blade and the Rudaynī spear.

It went unavenged, with no blood-retribution; and how

could we gain retribution for one slain between these two?

So, O you setting out for estrangement, how long will you strive

for swift parting, though the visiting place is near?

And O judge of union, when will payment be made,

through your justice, by his shunning, of the debt long owed to me?
