Sons of al-Dayyan, return my neighbor’s wealth,

And the captives in their heavy fetters.

And return the captives, if you wish, as a favor,

Or, if you wish, for ransom paid in money.

For you are people of kindness and generosity,

And hands reaching far in your giving.

Whenever you withhold something, there are no

Means of obtaining it other than asking.

And your war, sons of al-Dayyan, is a war

That makes a man choke even on clear water.

And the woman under your protection, sons of al-Dayyan, is inviolate,

And your protected neighbor is counted among your dependants.

ʿAbd al-Madan fashioned footwear for you,

    Green-fronted, according to a pattern.

Sons of al-Dayyan, indeed the sons of Ziyad

Are people of noble generosity and worthy deeds.

So grant me kindness, sons of al-Dayyan,

Which I shall acknowledge to you until the last of nights.
