O rider, if you pass that way, be sure to tell
Abu Ghalib that we have indeed avenged Ghalib.
قَتَلناwe killed بِعَبدِfor 'Abd اللَهِAllah خَيرَthe best of لِداتِهِhis age-mates

For 'Abd Allah we killed the finest of his age-mates:
Dhu'ab ibn Asma' ibn Zayd ibn Qarib.
وَأَبلِغand inform نُمَيراًNumayr إِنif مَرَرتَyou pass بِدارِهاby its dwelling

And tell Numayr, if you pass its dwelling,
despite its remoteness—what an ally and avenger!
وَعَبساًand 'Abs قَتَلناهُمwe killed them بِحُرِّin the heart of بِلادِهِمtheir land
بِمَقتَلِfor the killing of عَبدِ'Abd اللَهِAllah يَومَon the day of الذَنائِبِal-Dhana'ib
And 'Abs—we killed them in the heart of their land,
for the killing of 'Abd Allah on the day of al-Dhana'ib.
جَعَلناwe made بَنيthe sons of بَدرِBadr وَشَمخاًand Shamkh وَمازِناًand Mazin
لَناfor us غَرَضاًa target يَزحَمنَهُمthey jostle them بِالمَناكِبِwith shoulders
We made Banu Badr, Shamkh, and Mazin
targets for us, our horses jostling them with their shoulders.
فَلِليَومِfor this day سُمّيتُمyou were named فَزارَةَFazarah فَاِصبِرواso endure
لِوَقعِagainst the blows of القَناthe spears تَنزونَyou leap نَزوَthe leaping of الجَنادِبِgrasshoppers
For this very day you were named Fazarah—so endure
the spears' blows, as you leap like grasshoppers.
فَإِنfor if تُدبِرواyou turn away يَأخُذنَكُمthey strike you فيin ظُهورِكُمyour backs
وَإِنand if تُقبِلواyou come forward يَأخُذنَكُمthey strike you بِالتَرائِبِin the upper chests
For if you turn away, they strike you in your backs;
and if you come forward, they strike you in your upper chests.
وَإِنand if تُسهِلواyou enter level ground لِلخَيلِbefore the cavalry تُسهِلit enters level ground عَلَيكُمُagainst you

And if you take to the plain before the cavalry, it comes against you
with thrusts like the urine-spurts of pregnant, newly covered she-camels.
إِذاwhen أَحزَنواthey enter rugged ground تَغشَsweep over الجِبالَthe mountains رِجالُناour men
كَماjust as اِستَوفَزَتsprang up فُدرُmassive bucks الوُعولِof the ibex القَراهِبِaged and large
When they enter rugged ground, our men sweep over the mountains,
as huge, aged ibex spring up.
تَكُرُّcharge again عَلَيهُمagainst them رَجلَتيmy footmen وَفَوارِسيand my horsemen
وَأُكرِهَand I drive فيهُمinto them صَعدَتيmy straight spear غَيرَnot ناكِبِswerving
My footmen and my horsemen charge against them,
and I drive my straight spear into them, never swerving.
وَمُرَّةَand Murrah قَدindeed أَخرَجنَهُمthey drove them out فَتَرَكنَهُمthen they left them
يَروغونَthey dodge about بِالصَلعاءِat al-Sal'a' رَوغَthe dodging of الثَعالِبِfoxes
And Murrah—our horses drove them out and left them
dodging about at al-Sal'a' like foxes.
وَأَشجَعَand Ashja' قَدindeed أَدرَكنَهُمthey overtook them فَتَرَكنَهُمthen they left them
يَخافونَthey fear خَطفَbeing snatched by الطَيرِbirds مِنfrom كُلِّevery جانِبِside
And Ashja'—our horses overtook them and left them
fearing birds would snatch them away from every side.
وَثَعلَبَةَand Tha'labah الخُنثىal-Khuntha (the hermaphrodite) تَرَكناwe left شَريدَهُمtheir fugitive
تَعِلَّةَa diversion for لاهٍan idler فيin البِلادِthe lands وَلاعِبِand a player
And Tha'labah al-Khuntha—we left their fugitive
a diversion for idlers and players throughout the land.
وَلَولاand but for جَنانُthe concealment of اللَيلِthe night أَدرَكَwould have overtaken رَكضُناour galloping

But for the night's concealment, our gallop would have overtaken
Iyad ibn Nashib among the rimth and arta shrubs.
فَلَيتَso, would that قُبوراًgraves بِالمَخاضَةِat al-Makhadah (the ford) أَخبَرَتgave news

Would that the graves at al-Makhadah could give news,
so they might tell al-Khudr—the Khudr of Muharib—about us:
رَدَbattered (fragment of رَدَسْناهم) سناهُمُwe ... them (remaining fragment) بِالخَيلِwith the cavalry حَتّىuntil تَمَلَّأَتbecame gorged
عَوافيscavenging الضِباعِthe hyenas وَالذِئابِand the wolves السَواغِبِthe ravenous
we battered them with cavalry until they were gorged—
the scavenging hyenas and the ravenous wolves.

Let me roam through the lands; perhaps I
may meet at Ithr a band of Muharib.
