O rider, if you happen to pass, be sure to tell
Abu Ghalib that we have indeed taken vengeance for Ghalib.
قَتَلناwe slew بِعَبدِfor 'Abd اللَهِAllah خَيرَthe finest of لِداتِهِhis peers

For Abdullah, we slew the finest of his peers:
Dhu'ab son of Asma' son of Zayd son of Qarib.
وَأَبلِغand tell نُمَيراًNumayr إِنif مَرَرتَyou pass بِدارِهاthrough its home

And tell Numayr, if you pass through its home,
despite its remoteness—what an ally and avenger!
وَعَبساًand 'Abs قَتَلناهُمwe slew them بِحُرِّin the heart of بِلادِهِمtheir lands

And 'Abs—we slew them in the heart of their lands,
for Abdullah's slaying on the day of al-Dhana'ib.
جَعَلناwe made بَنيthe sons of بَدرِBadr وَشَمخاًand Shamkh وَمازِناًand Mazin
لَناfor us غَرَضاًa target يَزحَمنَهُمthey press against them بِالمَناكِبِwith shoulders
We made the sons of Badr, Shamkh, and Mazin
targets for us, the horses pressing them with their shoulders.
فَلِليَومِso, for this day سُمّيتُمyou were named فَزارَةَFazara فَاِصبِرواso endure

For this day you were named Fazara; so endure
the blows of the lances, leaping like grasshoppers.
فَإِنfor if تُدبِرواyou retreat يَأخُذنَكُمthey strike you فيin ظُهورِكُمyour backs
وَإِنand if تُقبِلواyou advance يَأخُذنَكُمthey strike you بِالتَرائِبِin the chest bones
For if you retreat, they strike you in your backs,
and if you advance, they strike you in your chest bones.
وَإِنand if تُسهِلواyou take to the plains لِلخَيلِfor the cavalry تُسهِلit takes to the plains عَلَيكُمُagainst you
بِطَعنٍwith thrusts كَإيزاعِlike the goading of المَخاضِpregnant she-camels الضَوارِبِmated
And if you take to the plains, the cavalry comes upon you there,
with thrusts like the goading of pregnant, mated she-camels.
إِذاwhen أَحزَنواthey take to rugged ground تَغشَsweep over الجِبالَthe mountains رِجالُناour men

When they take to rugged ground, our men sweep over the mountains,
as massive old ibex bucks spring up.
تَكُرُّcharge عَلَيهُمat them رَجلَتيmy foot soldiers وَفَوارِسيand my horsemen
وَأُكرِهَand I force فيهُمinto them صَعدَتيmy straight spear غَيرَwithout ناكِبِswerving
My foot soldiers and horsemen charge at them,
and I force my straight spear into them, without swerving.
وَمُرَّةَand Murra قَدindeed أَخرَجنَهُمthey drove them out فَتَرَكنَهُمand so left them
يَروغونَthey dodge بِالصَلعاءِat al-Sal'a' رَوغَthe dodging of الثَعالِبِfoxes
And Murra—the horses drove them out and left them
dodging at al-Sal'a' as foxes dodge.
وَأَشجَعَand Ashja' قَدindeed أَدرَكنَهُمthey overtook them فَتَرَكنَهُمand so left them
يَخافونَthey fear خَطفَsnatching by الطَيرِthe birds مِنfrom كُلِّevery جانِبِside
And Ashja'—the horses overtook them and left them
fearing that birds would snatch them from every side.
وَثَعلَبَةَand Tha'laba الخُنثىal-Khuntha (the intersex one) تَرَكناwe left شَريدَهُمtheir fugitives
تَعِلَّةَa pastime لاهٍan idler فيin البِلادِthe land وَلاعِبِand a player
And Tha'laba al-Khuntha—we left their fugitives
a pastime for idlers and players in the land.
وَلَولاand but for جَنانُthe concealment of اللَيلِthe night أَدرَكَwould have caught رَكضُناour galloping

But for night's concealment, our galloping would have caught
'Iyad son of Nashib among the ramth and arta shrubs.
فَلَيتَso, if only قُبوراًgraves بِالمَخاضَةِat al-Makhada أَخبَرَتgave news

If only the graves at al-Makhada could give news,
and tell the Khudr—the Khudr of Muharib—about us:
رَدَbattered (split verb opening) سناهُمُwe ... them (split verb ending) بِالخَيلِwith the horses حَتّىuntil تَمَلَّأَتwere filled

We battered them with the horses until they were sated—
the scavenging hyenas and hungry wolves.

Let me roam through the lands; perhaps I shall
meet at Ithr a band of Muharib.
