أَعاذِلُO reproacher إِنَّماonly أَفنىwore away شَبابيmy youth
رُكوبِيَmy riding فيin response to الصَريخِthe cry for help إِلىtoward المُناديthe caller
O reproacher, my youth was worn away only
by my riding at the cry for help toward the caller,
مَعَwith الفِتيانِthe young men حَتّىuntil كَلَّgrew weary جِسميmy body
وَأَقرَحَand rubbed raw عاتِقيmy shoulder حَملُbearing النِجادِthe sword-belt
with the young men, until my body grew weary
and bearing the sword-belt rubbed my shoulder raw.
أَعاذِلُO reproacher إِنَّهُindeed it is مالٌwealth طَريفٌnewly acquired
أَحَبُّdearer إِلَيَّto me مِنthan مالٍwealth تِلادِinherited
O reproacher, it is newly acquired wealth,
dearer to me than inherited wealth.
أَعاذِلُO reproacher عُدَّتيmy equipment بَدَنيmy body وَرُمحيand my spear
وَكُلُّand every مُقَلِّصٍlong-legged steed شَكِسِstubborn القِيادِthe rein
O reproacher, my equipment is my body and my spear,
and every long-legged steed stubborn at the rein.
وَيَبقىand remains بَعدَafter حِلمِforbearance القَومِthe people حِلميmy forbearance
وَيَفنىand runs out قَبلَbefore زادَprovisions القَومِthe people زاديmy provisions
And my forbearance outlasts the people's forbearance,
and my provisions run out before the people's provisions.
