لَعَمرُكَby your life ماdid not آسىaid حِراضُḤirāḍ اِبنَthe son of أُمِّهِhis mother
عَلىin النَصفِfairness مِنof شَطرِa share of الكَلاءَةِkeeping watch قائِمُstanding
By your life, Ḥirāḍ did not aid his mother's son
by standing his fair share of the watch.
تَطاوَلَdragged on حَربُthe battle of اللَيلِthe night عَنbeyond قَدرِthe measure of ظَنِّهِhis expectation
فَنامَso he slept وَهَذاand this one آمِنُsecure from الفَتكِtreacherous attack نائِمُasleep
The night's battle dragged on beyond his reckoning,
so he slept, while this one lay asleep, secure from treacherous attack.
فَياso, ah خُطَّةًa scheme راثَتwas delayed عَلَيكَfor you وَنىfaltered لَهاover it
ثُمامَةُThumāmah يَرعاهاwatches over it عَلىover السَيفِthe sword جاثِمُcrouching
Ah, what a scheme, slow to reach you, over which faltered
Thumāmah, watching over it, crouched over his sword.
يَدُبُّcreeps إِلَيهِtoward him السَبعُthe beast of prey يَختُلُoutwits ظِلَّهُhis shadow
وَفيand in كَفِّهِhis palm صافيpure الحَديدَةِthe iron blade صارِمُa keen sword
The beast of prey creeps toward him, outwitting his shadow,
and in his palm is a keen sword of pure iron.
فَأَمكَنَthen he gave access to حَدَّthe edge of السَيفِthe sword مَرجِعَthe back of خَصمِهِhis foe
وَكَرَّand turned back يُساويkeeps even الخَطوَthe steps وَالشَخصُwhile the figure قائِمُstanding
Then he gave the sword's edge access to his foe's back,
and turned back with measured steps, while the figure remained standing.
فَآبَthen he returned إِلىto جَيبٍa bosom نَصيحٍfaithful فَلامَهُso he reproached him
وَمِنand among سُرَرِthe inmost folds of الجَيبِthe bosom النَصيحُthe sincere adviser المُلاوِمُthe reproving one
He returned to a faithful bosom, which reproached him;
and within the bosom's depths is the reproving counsellor.
فَقالَthen he said لَهُto him عُدreturn تُشفَyou will be healed نَفساًin spirit وَلاand do not تَكُنbe
عَلىin ظِنَّةٍsuspicion مِنهاof it وَلِلحَزمِand of prudence لائِمُreproachful
Then he said to him, 'Return: your soul will be healed; do not be
in doubt about it, nor one who blames prudence.'
فَقَلَّدَهُthen he garlanded him لَمّاwhen تَبَيَّنَhe discerned شَخصَهُhis figure
بِضَربَةِwith a blow of ثَأرٍvengeance لَمdid not تَخُنهاbetray it العَزائِمُfirm resolves
Then, when he discerned his figure, he garlanded him
with a stroke of vengeance that firm resolves did not betray.
فَماتاso they both died صَريعَيboth struck down by غِرَّةٍsurprise وَلَمَنand surely whoever سَعىhastened
إِلىtoward المَوتِdeath لَمdid not تُنظَمget strung عَلَيهِupon him التَمائِمُthe amulets
So both died, felled unawares; and surely whoever hastens
toward death has no amulets strung upon him.
