The heart disclosed a secret I had been hiding.

So how can love stay hidden when longing reveals it?

I kept concealing love's secret in my liver,

Until my tears disclosed what lay within it.

My speech never disclosed the love I kept concealed,

But my eyes revealed what I hid.

And longing grew fierce in me under the censurer's reproach; how often

A watcher appeared, rebuking him for this longing.

    O nights we spent embracing,

With the beloved, brief in his gathering-place!

And how many brief moments of intimacy were ours in the dwellings,

Beyond our wishes, watered by rain that passed at night.

How many rendezvous we arranged to meet there,

And the dwelling embraced us as its edges enfolded us.

Ah, how often my heart melted in love for him, and how often

[I spent?] a little night sipping the lips, which intoxicated my heart.

And at how sipping his clear, sweet saliva revives it.

Stop at al-Jadid, and turn away from its right-hand side.

A richly fragrant scent; turn toward its guide.

And go gently to the beloved, following

The waft of a pure scent there from his mouth.

Descend, greet that gazelle, and say:

Your lover sends you longing that has almost consumed him.

And lower a wing before him when you see him,

And explain the passion I suffer for him.

And you have left a sorrowful wraith among you,

Whose hidden parts passionate longing has laid bare.

The sanctuary of al-ʿAbid, and turn away from its left-hand side.

And recite the greeting of a lover like a phantom, for

Longing has left him not one of his qualities.

O our brief nights, now past,

Will you come with a dream-vision to one dead of love?

Our beloved ones, since your departure I have had neither

Patience nor fortitude for what I suffer.

Peace be upon you, O dwelling of the beloved, and O

Sanctuary of the beloved, and O abode of his people.

Peace be upon you, O day of embracing, and O

Day of farewell, and O day when I shall meet him.
