    O namesake of the Prophet, be gentle with a lovesick man,

    a true slave who, in longing, has sought none but you.

    And my heart has melted from the heat of separation,

    and my life, O my master, lies in meeting you.

    Have I breathed the breeze except because I knew,

    O my beloved, that it was fragrant with your scent?

    It sends these lines from me to tell

    of a captive bound by love for you.

    I have made my passion known, hoping to gain

    some day a little of the light of your radiance.

    How often I call, yet you neither answer nor respond,

    and my heart is enamored of your malady.

    رب خط أراه فيما أراكا

    Heal the heart—be generous with a letter;

    perhaps in a line I see, I shall see you.

    I wonder: have you shown aversion in this,

    or estrangement? Far be it from you, far from your nobility!

    افترضى تلاف قلب حواكا

    Indeed, my heart has become a home for your very self;

    would you then accept the ruin of a heart that holds you?

    If you are pleased with my torment,

    O my heart's desire, then how welcome your contentment is to me!
