لقد زرت من أهوى وقد زار آخر

به مهجتي مفتونة وأنا حبّ

Indeed I visited the one I love, and another had come;

I gazed upon whom I loved, though another did come

My soul is enthralled by him, and I am a lover.

My heart was enamoured, yet still I did shun

مسحت جبيني باللبان فقال لي

مشيراً لبيتٍ ما جرى بيننا عتب

مشيراً لبيتٍ ما جرى بيننا عتب

I wiped my brow against his breast, and he said to me,

He wiped my brow gently, reproach in his voice

Alluding to a verse: “No reproach has passed between us.”

For what had gone on in the home we once shared
