سعد العلياء جلا ثغرا

فرحا لما شهد القمرا

High glory's good fortune has unveiled a smile,

rejoicing when it beheld the moon.

وقماري العز شدت طربا

بربوع قد نفحت عطرا

And honor's turtledoves sang in rapture

in dwellings that breathed out fragrance.

اكرم بهلال قد لمعت

بشهاب محياه البشرى

How noble a crescent! Glad tidings shone

in the meteor-brilliance of his face.

وتقلد جيد المجد به

وبمولده عقدا دررا

And glory's neck was adorned through him

and through his birth with a necklace of pearls.

نجحت آمال الفوز به

لما وافى يحكي البدرا

Hopes of triumph were fulfilled through him

when he arrived, resembling the full moon.

قد أخصب روض الحي هنا

بمحاسنه وروى خبرا

The settlement's garden grew lush here

with his charms, and recounted the news.

وتمايل غصن البان به

لما بهناه الريح سرى

And the moringa bough swayed in his honor

when the breeze bore his joy through the night.

واستيقظ أعين نرجسه

ترعى محياه بغير كرى

And the eyes of its narcissi awoke,

watching his face without slumber.

طفل بالمهد تراه على

متن العليا خير الكبرا

A child in the cradle—you see him upon

the crest of eminence, the best of the great.

عجبا لسرير يحضنه

أنى يحوى المهد البحرا

What a marvel, the bed that embraces him!

How can the cradle contain the ocean?

نعم المولود وخير فتى

محمود الجود علا قدرا

Excellent is the newborn, the finest youth:

Mahmoud, praised for his bounty, rose high in rank.

أعني ذا الفضل وبحر البذل

ومن بالعدل سما كسرى

I mean the man of virtue and ocean of giving,

and he who surpassed Kisra in justice.

الهادي المال ومهدي الضال

بنور شهاب قد ظهرا

The giver of wealth and guide of the lost,

by the light of a meteor now revealed.

ورشيد الراي ومأمون الاقبال

ومعتصم طهرا

And wise in counsel, assured of good fortune,

and holding fast to purity.

انعم ببشير ذي كرم

لم يبق لمن حادوا ذكرا

How excellent is Bashir, possessed of generosity,

who left no mention of those who strayed.

جلت أوصاف محامده

عن ان تحصي البعض الشعرا

His praiseworthy qualities rise too high

for poets to count even a few.

ليث غيث بحر فخر

رشد سعد من يدن يرى

A lion, rain, an ocean, glory,

guidance, good fortune—whoever draws near will see.

حدت ما شئت به مدحا

فخليل المجد به نصرا

Say whatever you wish in his praise,

for glory's Khalil was granted victory through him.

نعم المسعود ابو المحمود

ومن بالجود حكى القطرا

Blessed indeed is Mahmoud's father,

who resembles the rain in generosity.

اسد رئبال إذا ما صال

على الابطال أرى العبرا

A lion, a fierce lion, whenever he charges

against champions, he teaches them lessons.

شهدت بنجابته شيم

طابت بمحاسنها نثرا

Traits attested to his nobility,

their beauties delightful when told in prose.

ضاءت للحزم نباهته

فسما همما وذكى فكرا

His discernment shone in prudent resolve,

so he soared in ambition and grew keen in thought.

مولى يوليك العجب اذا

اعتقل الخطي وعلا الضمرا

A lord who makes you marvel when

he couches the Khatti lance and mounts lean steeds.

فكأن البدر على برق

قد ضم براحته فجرا

As though the full moon, mounted on lightning,

had clasped a dawn within his palm.

ولكم رأت الاعدا عجبا

من حملته لما كرا

And how often foes witnessed wonders

from his onslaught when he charged!

وإذا الأمجاد رأت حمدا

أضحى لمحامدهم صدرا

And when the noble saw cause for praise,

he stood foremost among their virtues.

وتزين في أبهى خلق

ثغر الأزهار له افترا

And he was adorned with the fairest character;

the flowers' mouths broke into smiles for him.

ومعالي المجد له وفدت

فراته خليلا منتصرا

And the heights of glory came to him in homage

and beheld him—Khalil, triumphant.

تهنى بأمير محمود

قد جاد الله به برا

Rejoice in Emir Mahmoud,

whom God has bestowed in kindness.

ورعاه بعين الأمن وقد

جعل الأدهار له عمرا

May He guard him with safety's watchful eye, and

make the ages his lifespan.

وتراه أخا وأبا لجدود

بالعلياء بدوا غررا

And may you see him a brother and father to forebears

who appeared radiant on the heights of glory.

هناك الله ببهجته

ووقاك الشدة والضررا

May God give you joy in him,

and shield you from hardship and harm.

وحباك سرورا لم يبرح

كاس الآمال به وفرا

And grant you joy, so that forever

the cup of hopes stays brimming with it.

واسلم بالعز فان لكم

سعد العلياء جلا ثغرا

And live secure in honor, for to you
