Damietta delighted your eyes on the day of parting,
Your eyes delighted on the day we parted
and the heart held yearning beyond measure.
And in my heart excessive longing started

You settled there after our meeting-place had grown remote,
I reached it after the pilgrimage was over
and time's onslaught on noble men is grossly unjust.
And time brought downfall to the free and noble

Time is not praiseworthy in its ways
The era is not commendable in its morals
when an ignorant man and Hippocrates stand equal within it.
When ignorant and wise are rendered equal

I spend the night watching for the Levant's breezes, hoping
I refused to enjoy the breeze of Damascus
that a mere carat of Lebanon's east wind might visit me.
Hoping a bit of the Lebanese youth would visit me

And I ask the star in the darkness, waiting expectantly,
And I ask the stars in the darkness waiting
about a young gazelle whose cheeks [uncertain reading] bear no blemishes.
About a lover whose love ties I have severed

To him belongs my salutation of love whenever
a Zanj-black mole fixed above his mouth.

But for separation, time would not have ravaged the heart,
Had there been no separation, time wouldn't have

Inflicted on him various states and guises of betrayal

I ransom him with a moon rising above a branch
whose radiant luster no necklaces have kindled.
Whose brilliant splendor isn't marred by blemishes

How, then, can I forget, with this white gazelle in my liver,
So how can I feel at ease when in my liver lies
and in my last spark of life, grazing freely and making his home?
This well-aimed arrow and in my innermost, havoc and turmoil
