At the foot of Beiteddine, al-Safa has gushed forth,

In the foothills of Beit Al Deen the river flowed

Flowing in a chain like necklaces of gems.

Cascading, telling beads of pearls

فتمايلت أشجاره من شوقها

للقائه تحت القباء الأخضر

So its trees swayed in their longing

To meet it beneath the green robe.

وأشدّهنّ تشوّقاً للقائهِ

حوراءُ ذات تعزّزٍ وتجبر

And the most eager among them to meet it

And the most longing to meet it

Was a dark-eyed beauty—a poplar—proud and imperious.

Was a nymph, proud and aloof

فكأنها إذ لاعبت أوراقها

فكأنها إذ لاعبت أوراقها

هيفا تُعَرّضُ حليها للمشتري

So, as she played with her leaves, she seemed

Who, toying with her leaves,

A slender-waisted maiden displaying her jewels to the buyer.
