Arrow of death, how did you come to hunt

One from whose talons came the arrow of doom?

Her wing’s white feathers and charged after her quarry.

A breast! And how often her marvels left us astounded.

On the day of al-Shumaysa, from backbone to its two hollows,

And drew out its liver on the tip of her talon,

With a blow that was but one of her wonders.

What way is there for me to forget her glorious deeds,

When the greatest slaughter is but part of her merits?

Never did she race a swift runner without outstripping

The south wind as it blew upon her shoulders.

Ah, would that she had escaped every calamity,

And every hawk among her rivals had been her ransom!

But when she died and passed away, she became

The ransom for the emir of glory, her master.
