    And a young gazelle whose countenance puts the moons to shame

    In beauty, and whose radiance puts the sun to shame.

    في ثغرهِ الدر وضاحٌ وبراق

    In the garden of his cheek, the ruby is ablaze;

    In his mouth, pearls are radiant and sparkling.

    Do not marvel if my eye weeps pearls for him,

    Or eyes pour forth a downpour of coral.

    What was said has indeed proved true, and the eyelids bear witness:

    When he smiles, the eye is indeed an inveterate thief.
