    لكن أقرب منها الفيل والسندُ

    A narrator for Mayya, nearby in the moonlight [wording unclear];

yet the elephant and Sindh are nearer than she.

If Mayya knew some of what I feel

of passion, she would not withhold what she promises.

My recollection of Mayya is that love’s anguish enthralled her,

and love led her to waters like those I drink from.

Ah, I wonder: has she kept and honored love’s covenant,

or have rejection and time stood in the way of her fidelity?

May God not hold those eyes to account, even if

they wrong a heart splitting apart with longing.

She is the beloved, whether she is unjust or fair

to her lovesick lover, or eternity stretches between us.

May rain water a home of fellowship that stirred my grief,

and my heart has never ceased to wander lovesick in its precincts.
