A man has hopes amid the vicissitudes of time.

And misfortunes have their advance and retreat.

Every night bears its own pre-dawn hour.

And the early hours of days have their evenings.

While a man lives in ease, around him turns

    hardship; likewise, advance accompanies retreat.

If time lavishes safety and standing,

do not be deceived: within abundance lies want.

    فلا تغرُّ ففي الإكثار اقلالُ

    So live with time, possessed of safety and standing;

do not be deceived: within abundance lies want.

Neither serenity nor trouble endures in it,

nor do joys and fears endure.

Nor say that this man rose to exalted eminence through wisdom,

nor say that ignorance brought this man's fortunes low.

How many a man of intellect has risen in the ranks of glory,

and how many fools have held sway in high places.

A decree from God has baffled every man of judgment,

though hearsay and gossip about it have long abounded.

As though time, of wisdom and of ignorance,

were compounded—and in both states it acts.

The ignorant rise in an age's time of ignorance,

and the wise rise when time is wise.

    فإنما العز حلالٌ ورحالُ

    So emulate honor if you find no ease;

for honor is ever settling and departing.

And say to a dwelling that wept in sorrow on departure day:

You have no horses to give, nor any wealth.

When cups of bitter aloe are poured in one land,

honey and red wine flow in another.

And if a homeland grows troubled in its circumstances,

elsewhere, homelands and circumstances grow serene.

So cross the wastes; the best companion is a sleek horse,

    a fetter for wild beasts—or a lean, swift-striding she-camel—

and a steadfast one, whose flank no calamity shakes:

a heart whose sinews are made of fierce courage.

her entrails blazes the flame of fire.

    فكل ريحٍ أتتها فهي مكسالُ

    A ship running over the water rends the wind;

every wind that comes to her is sluggish.

If a pre-dawn hour smiles upon her on the green sea,

evening lays her to rest in Serendib.

Do not despair of relief, brother in adversity:

it comes to you from where the mind never seeks it.

And hold yourself high if terrors afflict you.

Who has never been struck by a misfortune?

In that, all people are alike.

Time has multiplied treachery and distress,

and honored no pledge when it rose to strike by stealth.

It does not grant each man his character's due—

may its hands perish! Is heedlessness in its eyes?

Time is not to blame: time itself has no

authority, though sayings about this abound.

Time is only the deeds of men; and if

reason strays, deeds are attributed to time.

    وأقصرا إن هذا اللوم قتالُ

    O my two companions, spare me your reproaches;

and desist: this blame is deadly.

Reproach is useless after the opportunity has passed.

What good does it do? An outpouring drives sorrow onward.

For dusk accompanies the sun after the forenoon,

and the full moon undergoes concealment and reappearance as a crescent.

news, and inquiries about Darat al-Qamra,

and about a band who gave their lives to battle,

and whose people and kin were never deceived?

their people were undone by a keen sword and a quivering spear.

    delicate, never hindered by illness,

it grows distant, he remembers it, his eyelid streaming.

the beauty of patience from youth, by reproachers.

after parting, a gazelle distressed by ill omen,

and a full moon of beauty who recited, when he lamented sorrowfully:

'A man has hopes amid the vicissitudes of time.'
