They did not falsely report the passion.

Love for you was no tale to be fabricated.

Full moons rose from your buttons.

And the bonds of the lovesick lover's endurance snapped.

O you for love of whom I forsook my reproacher,

is it lawful under love's law that I be forsaken?

I defy reproach, and no sleep obeys me,

as though my ear were my eye, and reproach were sleep,

for every slender-figured beauty, as though she were

a bough the breeze stirs as it steals past.

She said, having heard of my flowing tears:

'The narrator spoke truly; the tale is just as it happened.'

She was mentioned, and the reproacher ignorantly belittled her,

until she appeared before the onlookers, and he cried, 'God is great!'

And I knew not the meaning of beauty until she approached,

then saw it shining in her, given visible form.

Never mention gazelles beside her glances,

ever—for all the game is in the wild ass's belly.

Since I am the Kalim, wounded by love,

she gave me my answer in love: 'You shall not see.'

Indeed, I journeyed through the night of her black hair,

and at the dawn of her smile, I praised the night journey.

She rose, having put on her jeweled necklaces,

and I saw a bough bearing jewels as its fruit.

O you who, whenever her sweet speech passes,

O friend, away from aged wine—and grow drunk!

Never did your waist appear, girdled in slenderness,

without stirring thoughts of your aversion.

On the day of parting you cheapened the price of my tears,

and left my heart ablaze with passion.

Do not aspire to rule over lovers,

for Sultan al-Nasir already rules humankind.
