قدindeed قلتI said لماwhen مرhe passed بيby me معرضاًturning away
قد قلت لما مر بي معرضاً
وكفهand his hand يحملcarries زرزوراa starling
وكفه يحمل زرزورا
I said, when he passed me, turning away,
When he passed by me with indifference,
And his hand was carrying a starling:
His hand holding a flower,
ياO ذاyou الذيwhose عذبنيtormented me مطلهhis stalling
يا ذا الذي عذبني مطله
إنif لمnot يزرhe visits حقاًtruly فزرزوراthen visit falsely (a pun on 'starling')
إن لم يزر حقاً فزرزورا
O you whose stalling has tormented me,
I said to the one who torments me with his absence,
If he does not visit in earnest, then visit in pretense.
"If he won't visit in truth, then visit as a flower."
