How many a discerning, learned man of letters,

Fully endowed with reason, is poor and destitute!

وكم جهول مكثر ماله

ذلك تقدير العزيز العليم

ذلك تقدير العزيز العليم

And how many an ignorant man has abundant wealth!

That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.

أديم مطال الجوع حتى أميته

أديم مطال الجوع حتى أميته

وأضرب عنه الذكر صفحاً وأذهل

وأضرب عنه الذكر صفحاً وأذهل

I keep putting hunger off until I kill it,

And I dismiss all thought of it, turning away and forgetting.

واستف ترب الأرض كي لا يرى له

واستف ترب الأرض كي لا يرى له

علي من الطول امرىء متطول

علي من الطول امرىء متطول

And I swallow the earth's dust, lest any giver of favors

See his bounty as giving him a claim upon me.
