تنفس الصبح فجاءت لنا
منfrom نحوهits direction الأنفاسthe breaths مسكيهmusk-scented
من نحوه الأنفاس مسكيه
Dawn breathed, and there came to us
The morning breathed, and from it came
from its direction musk-scented breaths.
To us breaths musky and serene,
وأطربتand sang enchantingly فيupon العودthe bough (also: the lute) قمريةa turtledove
وأطربت في العود قمرية
وكيفand how لاnot تطربenchant عوديهa lute-player; of the bough (wordplay)
وكيف لا تطرب عوديه
And a turtledove sang enchantingly upon the bough—
And a moon-like beauty sang within
and how could she not enchant, being a lute-player?
The strings of my lute; and how could she refrain?
