مَنwho لِدَمِfor the blood of القَتيلِthe slain one
مَن لِدَمِ القَتيلِ
مِنfrom طَرفِكَyour gaze الكَحيلِkohl-dark
مِن طَرفِكَ الكَحيلِ
Who will avenge the slain one’s blood,
Who will avenge the blood of one slain
shed by your kohl-darkened eye?
by your kohl-dark gaze?
وَيلاهُalas! طَلَّwent unavenged هَدَراًin vain
وَيلاهُ طَلَّ هَدَراً
مِنfrom خَدِّكَyour cheek الأَسيلِsmooth
مِن خَدِّكَ الأَسيلِ
Alas! His blood has gone unavenged,
Alas! It was shed in vain
spilled by your smooth, shapely cheek.
because of your smooth cheek.
لَولاكَwere it not for you ماnot بَرانيwore me down
لَولاكَ ما بَراني
مَعذلةُthe rebuke of العَذولِthe reproacher
مَعذلةُ العَذولِ
Were it not for you, I would not have been worn away
But for you, I would not be worn down
by the tormentor of the reproacher.
by the reproacher's rebuke.
ياO جَنَّتيmy paradise وَناريand my fire
يا جَنَّتي وَناري
وَمَحنَتيand my affliction وَسوليand my desire
وَمَحنَتي وَسولي
O my paradise and my fire,
O my paradise and my fire,
my ordeal and my heart’s desire!
and my affliction and my desire!
مَنwho ذاthis one يُطيقُcan bear صَبراًpatience
مَن ذا يُطيقُ صَبراً
عَنaway from وَجهِكَyour face الجَميلِbeautiful
عَن وَجهِكَ الجَميلِ
Who could possibly endure with patience
Who can endure patiently
being parted from your beautiful face?

كُلُّall نُحولِthe wasting of جسميmy body
كُلُّ نُحولِ جسمي
مِنfrom خَصرِكَyour waist النَحيلِslender
مِن خَصرِكَ النَحيلِ
All the wasting of my body
All the wasting of my body
comes from your slender waist.

حاشاكَmay you be spared منfrom سُهاديmy sleeplessness
حاشاكَ من سُهادي
