What harm, do you think, does my love for you do to those who reproach me?

My heart is tormented, and my eyelid is wounded by you.

You ask me to forget my love; had I known how,

I would not have spent the night robbed of sleep, in endless sorrow.

Every lover has, in love, an art of anguish,

And my art in loving you is refusing to heed reproach.

You are sweet to my heart in taste, and pleasing

To my gaze in sight, and to my ear in sound.

So the day of wishes is the day I win nearness to you,

And the day of death is the day you turn away from me.

When I spend the night terrified, threatened with separation,

Then you are sweeter to my heart than safety.
