هَوىlove of أَجفانِكَyour eyelids المَرضىthe ailing
To what wasting illness has it led—
this love of your languid eyelids?

لِمَنfor one who لاnot يَعرِفُknows الغَمضاslumber
I slept through the night; you do not increase [sense unclear]
for one who knows no slumber.
كَذاthus مَنone who فَرَضَimposed الوَجدَpassion
عَلىupon عُشّاقِهِhis lovers فَرضاas an obligation
Such is he who imposed passion
upon his lovers as a duty.

وَوَجديand my passion فيهِfor him ماwhat يُقتَضىis exacted

My life for an overbearing judge,
and my passion for him is what is exacted;

and a full moon—the moon itself has come
to kiss the ground before him;

love of him, though he is not content.
