The eyes of the gazelles of Hajir
The dazzling cheeks of the gazelles gleam
are sharper than bright blades—the gleaming Mashrafi swords.
Brighter than white egg shells at dawn's first beam

Do not blame my sickness on anything but their health;
Heed not my sickness other than its source
for the heart's affliction comes from those healthy eyes.
The malady of my heart comes from that pure source

Indeed, by the heat of longings that blaze in
Lo the coals that kindle flames in my heart
my heart for the coolness of your teeth, O pearly ones,
To warm its folds, O luminous pearls thou art

Naught but those bending branches brought to me
those skittish, calf-like oryx.
Slumber 'tween my eyes and pillow, canst thou see

O you who reproach the lover, my mind, through love and grief,
Chider of my passion and longing in vain
is bewildered by Babylonian eyes.
Bewildered am I by your eyes that detain

If you ever seek news of my blood,
If you ask one day for news of my blood
turn aside to those crimson cheeks.
Incline towards those rosy cheeks, understands who would

And a lightning flash that gleamed toward al-Jidhʿ stirred in me
Lightning flashed towards the tree trunk and awoke in me
at al-Raqmatayn longings of old.
With anklets two, memories of days that used to be

O lightning, you have lately come from Salam;
O lightning you were born not far from Salma's abode
stay, tell me news—welcome, visitor!
Stop, and give me news - whence have you showed?

May the preserve, and the ages that passed in the preserve, be watered
The tribe quenched thirst for years from that spring eye
by banks of clouds, pouring freely and bringing rain—
Clouds poured down heavy rain from high sky

playgrounds where Time used to bring us together,
Sporting places where fate once brought us together
and a season gone by amid the sweetest pleasures.
Seasons passed in the most blissful weather

Who will bring back that dear, dazzling time?
my sorrow for those nights at Hajir!
I yearn for those glittering, perfect climes

O life of those days, return to me one day, by your own worth;
O precious life, return for one day more
for restoring what is lost is among the deeds of nobility.
Lost pleasures sometimes return from fate's store

O evenings of the valley, I swear by my life
do bring back those evenings to us!
You will repeat those evenings of joy without strife
