الهَمُّworry والأَحزانُand sorrows وَالوَجدُand yearning ليmine
Spend the night at ease, with a carefree heart;
I spent the night comfortably with a heart devoid of worries,
Worry, sorrows, and yearning are mine.
Sorrows, griefs and passions are far from me.
ياراقدO sleeper الليلthe night هَناكmay it gladden you الكرىslumber
عَينيmy eye مِنَfrom الرَقدَةِsleep فيin مَعزِلِisolation
O sleeper through the night, may slumber be sweet to you;
O you who sleep there in the ruins,
My eye is far removed from sleep.
My eyes are set apart from slumber.
قَدindeed بَرَّحَhas tormented الشَوقُlonging فَكَمso how long ذاthis الجَفاcoldness
ياO غايَةَgoal الآمالِof hopes لاdo not تَغفَلُbe heedless
Longing has tormented me—how long this coldness?
How separation has wandered aimlessly, so many times!
O goal of my hopes, do not be heedless.
O object of my hopes, do not neglect me!
كَمhow often قُلتُI said خَوفاًout of fear مِنof دَواعيpromptings الهَوىof love
إِيّاكَyou (beware) وَالهَجرُand parting فَلَمbut did not تَقبَلِyou accept
How often I said, fearing the promptings of love,
How often I said, fearing the promptings of passion:
'Beware of parting!'—but you would not listen.
"Beware of avoidance!" But you did not accept.
اِذكُرremember عُهوداًtimes حَيثُwhen واصَلتَنيyou united with me
وَنَحنُand we بِالشَرقِيِّin the eastern part مِنof أربَلِErbil
Remember the times when you were united with me,
Remember when you used to join me,
While we were in the eastern part of Erbil.
While we were in the east of Arbil.
وَالكَأسُand the cup يَحكيهاresembles it نَسيمَthe breeze الصَباof the east wind
تخجلُputs to shame نَشرَthe fragrance المِسكِof musk وَالمَندَلِand aloeswood
And the cup, which the east wind's breeze resembles,
The cup tells of it, by the morning breeze,
Puts the fragrance of musk and aloeswood to shame.
Ashamed to spread the musk and mandil.
وَكُلَّماand whenever ناوَلتَنيyou gave me قبلَةًa kiss
أَشرَقَshone وَجهُthe face الزَمَنِof time المُقبِلِto come
And whenever you gave me a kiss,
Whenever you would give me a kiss,
The face of time to come shone bright.
The face of time coming would shine.
وَأَنتَand you بِالقُربِclose by إِلىat جانِبيmy side
أَحسَنmore beautiful مِنthan حَسناءَa beautiful woman تَحتَbeneath الحُلىthe jewels
And you, close by my side,
And you being near me, by my side,
Are lovelier than a beauty beneath her jewels.
Is better than a beautiful woman adorned with trinkets.
