رُدّواrestore لِقَلبيto my heart القَلَقَrestless الفِراراflight
وَخَبِّرونيand tell me الرَكبَthe caravan أَينَwhere ساراit went
Restore flight to my restless heart,
Return to my heart the restlessness of escape
And tell me where the caravan has gone.
And tell the caravan where it journeyed
وَسامِحواand forgive النَومَsleep عَلىfor نِفارِهِits flight
لَوولاwere it not for الهَوىlove ماnot عَرَفَwould have known النِفاراflight
And forgive sleep for its flight;
Forgive sleep for its aversion
Were it not for love, it would never have known flight.
If not for passion, aversion itself would not be known
ياO عاذِليmy reproacher فيfor شَغَفيmy passion بِحُبِّهِfor love of him
دَعنيleave me فَقَدfor indeed آنَستُI perceived مِنهُfrom him ناراa fire
O you who chide me for my passionate love of him,
O you who blame me for my ardent love of him
Leave me, for I have glimpsed a fire from him.
Leave me be, for I have glimpsed in him a fire
ظَبيُa gazelle كَناسٍa covert لَوif دَرىknew الظَبيُthe gazelle بِهِof him
مِنfrom مُقلَتَيهِhis two eyes الدَعجdeep blackness اِستَعاراit would borrow
A gazelle in its covert—if a gazelle knew of him,
A gazelle of Kanaas, if that gazelle but knew of him
It would borrow deep blackness from his eyes.
He would borrow the languid grace of his eyes
عَشِقتُهُI loved him سِرّاًsecretly فَلَمّاbut when غَلَبَتovercame
صَبابَتيmy yearning هَوَيتُهُI loved him جَهاراopenly
I loved him secretly, but when I was overcome
I loved him secretly, but when
By my yearning, I loved him openly.
My youthful passion overcame me I declared my love openly
وَكانَand there was ليfor me قَلبٌa heart فَلَمّاbut when زارَنيhe visited me
وَهَبتُهُI gave it لِحُسنِهِto his beauty اِستِبشاراjoyfully
And I had a heart, but when he visited me,
I had a heart, but when he visited me
I joyfully gave it to his beauty.
I gifted it to him in joyous welcome
مُذsince لَبِسَdonned العِذارَthe cheek-down خاليthe bare part of خَدِّهِhis cheek
خَلَعتُI cast off فيin الحُبِّlove لَهُfor him العِذاراthe bridle
Since his bare cheek donned its down,
Since the day he donned the garb of down on his cheek
I have cast off the bridle for him in love.
I have doffed for him in love the garb
ماhow أَطيَبَsweet القَتلَbeing slain بِسَيفِby the sword of لَحظِهِhis glance
رُزِقتُهُmay I be granted it وَلاand not رزقتُmay I be granted ثاراvengeance
How sweet to be slain by the sword of his glance!
How sweet is death by the sword of his glance
May I be granted it, and never granted vengeance.
Granted to me, though I sought no vengeance
