هِيَ رامَةٌ وَنَسيمُها الخَفّاقُ
No wonder that longings have toyed with him:
No wonder if longing plays with it,
it is Rāmah and its fluttering breeze.
It is a gazelle and its breeze is fluttering.

Whoever would reproach him—love has prevailed,
Whoever blames it has been overcome by passion,
and locks have taken command of his heart.
And darkness has taken over his heart.

Leave my heart alone with passion, for it is
Leave my heart alone and passion, for it
a heart wholly immersed in loving them.
Is a heart drowned in their love.

How many a living heart within al-ʿUdhayb's bounds
How much coquetry is between the arms of the languid one,
has been swept away by cheeks and eyes!
Taken away by the cheeks and eyelids.

From every one whose figure the breeze has toyed with,
Whoever the breeze toyed with his braid
so his restless sash complained of room to spare.
His place of departure and cloak complained.

The Ḥijāz is enamored of him; all its water
The love of Hejaz consumed it so its waters
is tears, and its every breeze is longing.
Are a tear and every breeze desires.

O heart, desist! For whoever is rebuked in love,
O heart, who is harshly blamed in love,
blame is a burden scarcely to be borne.
Blame is a burden that can hardly be borne.

How can one escape when the eyelids are drowsy?
How can one free himself when the eyelids are vigilantes
And with what find solace when the figures are slender?
And with what can one console when the necks are lofty?

مَن لا يَلُمُّ بِقَلبِهِ إِشفاقُ
And on the solitary dune, he openly declared his passion—
And on the solitary hill passion bragged
one whose heart no compassion touches.
Of one whose heart has no compassion.

أَن لا يَزال دَمي عَلَيهِ يُراقُ
Love exacted from me a pledge for his cheek:
Passion took a pact to her cheek
that my blood should forever be shed upon it.
That my blood over it will always be shed.

Like that, such are the lovers.

Ḥājirī passion decreed their captivity,
Passion judged it fully
so they came to wear collars around their necks.
So she wore shackles around her neck.

I long to spend the evening pierced by his figure,
I long to spend an evening in his embrace
where combat is strength of will and embrace.
Where the descending is soft and the hugging intense.

And I love the scorpions of his temple-lock to sting me,
And I love to be bitten by the hornets of his cheek
knowing that his saliva is an antidote.
Knowing that his satisfaction is a healing.

Alas for me, for a slender one of coy manners,
Woe to him, from the concealment of the attributes of a censured lover
for whose captive no release can be hoped.
For whom his captive has no hope of release.

Night swore that the darkness was his hair,
The night swore that the blackness is his hair
and dawn that his brow was radiance.
And the dawn that his forehead is the emergence of light.

Since the envoy of his temple-lock came bearing signs,
Since the signs were sent by his cheek
no hypocrisy has remained in the faith of love.
There remains no hypocrisy in the religion of passion.

And a radiance glittered in al-Liwā's opening,
Teeth that shone between the parting of his twist,
so the corners of the eyes streamed with their tears.
So it poured out with its tears the water springs.

Love sent forth from the tents—oh, what
Passion sent from the tents, oh how
gifts, to bear which necks are stretched!
Bags extended to carry them on necks.

O heart, are the people of the dwelling asking
about what drives lovers mad with passion?
About what the lovers conceal out of passion?

on their departure, joy's mansions are moonless.
In travel, the towers of happiness erased.

They left, neither the twist of separation appeared, which
called bān, nor are its leaves any longer leaves.
Is named, nor its leaves, the leaves.

By God, which gazelle was torn apart

By the hands of youth and trotting feet driven?

The trace of burdens and its tears gushing.

That the doves are abandonment and separation.
