1. لا وَالرَبيعُ النَضيرُ

    وَزَهرِهِ المُستَنيرُ

    Nay, by the verdant spring,

    and its radiant blossoms—

    قَد أَقبَلَت في جَريرِ

    narcissi and daisies

    that have come forth in [silk?];

    love-stricken, forsaken one;

    أَشرَقنَ في دَيجورِ

    and irises, like stars

    that shone in deep darkness;

    and the fragrance [wafted?] by the breeze of the

    rain-drenched violet;

    in trills and deep, rumbling calls;

  8. وَالغُصنُ مَيّالُ عَطفٍ

    كَشارِبٍ مَخمورِ

    and the bough, swaying from side to side,

    like an intoxicated drinker;

    في جَيشِهِ المَنصورِ

    and the rose has truly passed

    through its victorious army;

  10. وَالماءُ أَزرقَ صافٍ

    مُرَقرَقٍ بِجَريرِ

    and the water, blue and clear,

    rippling with a [murmur?];

  11. وَالراحُ مِن عَهدِ كِسرى

    تُجلى بِكَفِّ مُديرِ

    and wine from the age of Kisra,

    unveiled in a cupbearer's palm—

    ما بَينَ بَمٍّ وَزيرِ

    I shall surely spend my life

    between the bass and treble strings,

    to sip wines.

    from a great dignitary,

    in nobility and dignity

    and in the height of illustrious glory.

    لَدَيَّ في دُستورِ

    My experiences with people are now

    set down in a register I keep:

    بِحالةٍ في غُرورِ

    whoever among them clings

    to a condition is deluded.
