    دَمعي المُقِرُّ بِهِ فَلم لا يحبسُ

    Longing’s debtor is bankrupt of patience;

    my tears acknowledge it—why, then, are they not imprisoned?

    عِندَ الوَفاءِ بِها تُباعُ الأَنفُسُ

    I would ransom those who hold bonds of companionship;

    when those bonds are fulfilled, souls are sold.

    If they could hear the silence born of their desertion—

    a plight that softens even smooth, lifeless stone.

    They departed, and the tears I have known since they left

    are sold and undervalued in the marketplace of their parting.

    Ah for my wounded eye and its hopes

    of a lapse after parting, that it might doze.

    Far away is any solace for me in love,

    and the dark-lipped gazelle stirs my affliction.

    A gazelle, as though the roses on his cheeks, in

    his lovers’ blood, were dipped each day.

    Intoxicated though he has drunk no wine; his stature

    is a bough, yet its planting-place is my heart.

    Why should he not launch a raid upon my heart,

    when his cheek is clad in the chain mail of its down?

    فَإِذا جرَت فيها المَدامِعُ تَيبَسُ

    Weeping has made pits of the cheek;

    so when tears flow into them, they dry up.

    Thus sleep is banished from my wounded eyelid,

    and sorrow is established in my wounded heart.

    How wondrous his languid eye—within the hearts of the

    lovers, it is deadlier than a lion roaming by night.

    حانَ البَنَفسَجُ فيهِما وَالنَرجِسُ

    He captured the heart with cheek-down and an eye;

    in both, the violet and narcissus have come into season.

    How can there be a path to solace, when I have a heart

    where passion now rises and sits?

    O you who leave me lonely, since you left me I have remained

    alone, bereft of friends, with none to keep me company.

    Do not fear blood-revenge, though your cheek bears witness

    against you with my blood—for my tongue is mute.

    And may you be spared [love’s burning grief], lodged within the heart,

    and wasting sickness that impoverishes through time’s bitterness.

    There are roses on his cheek, yet his gaze

    now guards them with its arrows of coquetry.

    فَالثَغرُ يَبسُمُ وَالجُفونُ تُعَبِّسُ

    His glances strike whenever he smiles at me;

    so his mouth smiles, while his eyelids frown.

    And with a cheek that has become Hell’s blaze—

    marvel, then: that down upon it is fine silk.

    كَم قَد أَضَلَّ مِنَ الأَنامِ المُندِسُ

    No wonder if he now leads astray with his hair;

    how many among humankind the lurking one has led astray!
