If the glances of your eye denied my death,

The edges of the veil would testify to their deadly blow.

The blood spilled on the day at Suwayqa went unavenged,

Between the stance of one bidding farewell and one being bid farewell.

O driver of the litter-bearing camels, do not turn them

Away from the bān trees on the dunes of al-Liwā and al-Ajraʿ.

Turn aside with the thirsty, circling camels, for they have no

Access to water at any watering place outside the protected pasture.

And if the cloud's eyelid is unkind, lead them to drink

What flowed in their wake from my weeping eye.

I send greetings, yet not every greeting

Gives the lovesick lover satisfaction when sent.

So when the phantom circles around me, it finds nothing

But a phantom like itself in my place.

So now you have betrayed the pledge, O dusky-lipped one,

And severed the bond of a steadfast lover who never severed it.

And you thought that the affection between us

Still endured, and loyalty to the pledge was not neglected.

Will our life at Liwā al-Ujayriʿ return,

And the halts I made in Laʿlaʿ?

From me, greetings to you, never departing [uncertain reading],

Sent to you with the departing camel caravan.

And if a dwelling brings us near, O my heart's desire,

An ember within my ribs will cool with you near.
