وَلاand not مَلَلتُI grew weary فَلِمso why عَنfrom صَبِّهِمtheir lovesick lover مالواthey turned away
I never swerved from their covenant for a day—why did they stray?
Nor did I weary—why did they turn from their lovesick lover?
أَحبابَناour beloveds عَذَرواwere excused فيin الحُبِّlove مُذwhen غَدرواthey betrayed

بَلاyes بِلاwith a “no” ً بَعدَهاafter it لَمnot يَسكُنِfound repose البالُthe mind
Were our beloveds excused in love when they betrayed?
Yes—with a “no” after which the mind found no repose.
لَوif أَنصَفواthey were fair واصَلواthey granted union صَبّاًa lovesick lover صَبابَتهُhis yearning

Had they been fair, they would have granted union to a lover whose passion
Has become proverbial throughout the lands.

وَالدَمعُand the tears يَذرُفُflow حَيثُwhere الرَكبُthe caravan قِفّالُhomeward-bound
I entrust to God those I parted from before dawn,
While tears stream where the caravan journeys home.
قَرَّبتُI brought close بَينَbetween الأَسىsorrow وَالوَجدِand yearning مُذsince بَعدواthey went far away
وَقُلتُand I said لِلنَومِto sleep إنّيI am indeed عَنكَaway from you مقتالُturning away
I brought sorrow and yearning together when they went far away,
And told sleep, “I am turning away from you.”

By God, what blood has parting spilled with impunity!
The camp-traces and ruins of those I love lie deserted.

O playground of the tribe, may rain greet you, and may
The skirts of youthful dalliance be trailed through you.
هَلwill …? عائِدٌreturning وَالأَمانيwhile hopes غَيرَnot صادِقَةٍtrue
أَسحارُpredawn hours of وَصلٍunion قَضَيناهاwe spent them وَآصالُand evenings
Will they return—though hopes are untrue—
Those predawns of union we shared, and those evenings?

Those days when no spiteful foe was feared, nor any distance
Descended, and Time's averted face offered welcome.
لَوif ساوَمَتنيbargained with me اللَياليthe nights رَدَّthe return of فائِتِهاtheir vanished past

بِالروحِfor life وَالمالِand wealth هانَwould be cheap الروحُlife وَالمالُand wealth
Had the nights bargained with me to restore their vanished hours
For life and wealth, life and wealth would have been cheap.

أَسماءَAsma إِنَّindeed بُرودَthe robes of الوَصلِunion أسمالُtattered rags
She passed us with her swaying gait, and I said to her,
“Asma, the robes of union are tattered rags.”
وَعَذبَةُand a sweet one الريقِof saliva أَودىruined بيme تَأَوُّدُهاher swaying
وَجداًwith longing وَساعَدَهاand aided her خالٌa beauty spot وَخلخالُand an anklet
And a sweet-mouthed beauty—her swaying has undone me
With longing; a beauty spot and an anklet aided her.

A temptress—had the sun seen her, it would not have risen,
Nor would it be said of the bough that it sways.

عَلَيهِover him فيin الحُبِّlove لَوّامٌa reproacher وَعُذّالُand censurers
And a slender-waisted, crimson-cheeked beloved—I am envied
For loving him, by reproachers and censurers.

His cheeks and temple-lock are camphor and musk perfume;
His saliva is honeyed, and his figure sways.
قامَتarose قِيامَةُthe Doomsday of قَلبيmy heart مُذsince شغفتُI became enamored بِهِof him
وَلَذَّand became sweet ليto me فيin هَواهُlove for him القيلَtalk وَالقالُand gossip
My heart's Doomsday came when I fell deeply in love with him,
And in loving him, talk and gossip grew sweet to me.
وَيلاهُalas for me مِنfor لَيلِa night of شِعرٍhair تَحتَهُbeneath it قَمَرٌa moon
وَآهُand ah مِنfor وَردِthe rose of خَدٍّa cheek فَوقَهُabove it خالُa beauty spot
Alas for a night of hair beneath which lies a moon!
And ah, for the rose of a cheek above which lies a beauty spot!
لَمwhy لاnot يُغيرُdoes he raid عَلىupon قَلبيmy heart بِعِزَّتِهِwith his might
وَالقَدُّand the figure وَالطَرفُand the glance رَمّاحٌa spearman وَنَبّالُand an archer
Why should he not raid my heart in his might,
With his figure a spearman and his glance an archer?
مَنwho ذاis it الَّذيwho دَلَّguided عَينيهhis eyes عَلىto تَلَفيmy destruction
تيهُpride يُرَنِّحُهُsets it swaying عُجبٌvanity وَإِدلالُand coquetry
Who showed his eyes the way to my destruction?
Pride, set swaying by vanity and coquetry.
قَلبيmy heart وَصدغاهُand his temple-locks مَجنونٌa madman وَسِلسِلةٌand a chain
فَالصَبُّso the lovesick lover يَختَلُّloses his reason وَالمَجنونُand the madman يَختالُstruts
My heart and his temple-locks are a madman and a chain;
So the lovesick lover loses his reason, while the madman struts.

The dawn of his brow entices my tormented heart,
And a deceitful glance of his beguiles the heart.
