حُلوُa sweet one دَلالٍcoquetry وَجفاand aloofness
He kept my eyelid sleepless and wore it away,
He kept me sleepless and was rough
one sweet in coquetry and aloofness.
With sweet coquetry and aloofness
ماكُنتُI would not have لولاwere it not for قَدّهhis stature
أَهوىlove القَضيبthe branch الأَهيَفاthe slender one
But for his stature, I would not
Had it not been for his form
love the slender branch.
I would not crave his stiff member
صُدودُهُhis aversion داءٌa sickness وَلَbut (first fragment)
كِنbut (completing fragment) نَظرَةٌa glance مِنهُfrom him شِفاa cure
His aversion is a sickness, but
His disdain is an illness but
a glance from him is a cure.
His gaze brings healing, it's true
عَرَّفَنيhe made me know فَرطَthe excess of الأَسىgrief
وَالوَجدَand passionate longing قَلبيmy heart عَرَّفاhe made know
He made me know grief beyond measure,
He let me know intensity of longing
and taught my heart passionate longing.
And passion made my heart recognize him
واحَرَباalas, my anguish! لِعارِضٍfor a downy cheek
خَطَّtraced لِقَتليto kill me أَلِفاan alif
Alas for a downy cheek
An eyebrow drew for my murder
that traced an alif to kill me!
A thousand lines, it was fate
وَناظِرٍand an eye عَلَيَّagainst me فيin
سَطوَتِهِits onslaught قَدindeed أَسرَفاwent too far
And for an eye that, against me,
And an eye over me in
has gone too far in its onslaught.
His power was lavish, went too far
فَدَيتُI would ransom قَدّاًa stature عامِلاًdoing its work
لَهُfor him وَصدغاًand a temple-lock مُشرِفاoverhanging
I would ransom a stature doing its work
So my ransom is a body working
for him, and an overhanging temple-lock,
For it and a smooth cheek
وَعارِضٍand a downy cheek وَقَعَdecreed (contextual reading) ليfor me
بِالوَجدِwith passionate longing حَسبيenough for me وَكَفىand it sufficed
and a downy cheek that decreed for me
And an eyebrow that befell me
longing—enough for me, and enough indeed.
With fervor, enough is my lot

يَme (completing fragment) فيin الهَوىlove لَوif عَطَفىhe showed compassion

What would it cost the one who wrongs
What's upon the one who wronged me
me in love, if he showed compassion?
In love, if he would pardon me
أَجودُmost generous ماwhen كانَhe was إِذاwhen

He is at his most generous when
The best of what was, if he
it occurs to him to act fairly.
In his fairness would vindicate me
وَبارِقٌand a lightning flash هَيَّجَstirred up ليin me
فَرطَthe excess of الأَسىgrief وَالأَسَفاand regret
And a flash of lightning has stirred in me
And a lightning that provoked for me
grief and regret beyond measure,
Intense longing and sorrow

and a life that has gone—I have not
And a life that is past, so I
found anything to take its place.
Did not find any alternative to it
