مُوَلَّعٌ بِالهَوى وَفَرطُ التَصابي

مُوَلَّعٌ بِالهَوى وَفَرطُ التَصابي

لَيسَ يَخلو مِن لَوعَةٍ وَاِكتِئابِ

لَيسَ يَخلو مِن لَوعَةٍ وَاِكتِئابِ

Enamored of love and excessive youthful dalliance,

Enamored with passion, exceeding moderation,

he is never free of anguish and melancholy.

He is never free from anguish and melancholy.

أنفَدَ الدَمعَ وَاِستَعارَ دَمَ ال

أنفَدَ الدَمعَ وَاِستَعارَ دَمَ ال

قَلبِ حذاراً مِن فُرقَةِ الأَحبابِ

قَلبِ حذاراً مِن فُرقَةِ الأَحبابِ

He exhausted his tears and borrowed the blood of the

He sheds every tear, borrowing the blood of his heart,

heart, for fear of parting from his loved ones.

Beware of parting with loved ones.

وَلَعَمري لَقَد يَهون عَلَيهِ

وَلَعَمري لَقَد يَهون عَلَيهِ

وكُلُّ شَيءٍ إِلّا فِراقَ الشَبابِ

وكُلُّ شَيءٍ إِلّا فِراقَ الشَبابِ

And by my life, he can surely bear

By my life, everything is easy for him

everything except parting with youth.

Except parting with the joys of youth.

فَإِذا أَمكَنَتكَ فُرصَةُ لَهوٍ

فَإِذا أَمكَنَتكَ فُرصَةُ لَهوٍ

فَاِقتَدِح مِن زِنادِها بِشِهابِ

فَاِقتَدِح مِن زِنادِها بِشِهابِ

So if a chance for pleasure comes your way,

So if you get a chance for pleasure,

then strike a flame from its flint.

Ignite its flints with a flame.

وَتَغَنَّم صَفوُ الزَمانِ فَإِنَّ ال

وَتَغَنَّم صَفوُ الزَمانِ فَإِنَّ ال

عُمر إن طالَ لَمعَة مِن سَرابِ

عُمر إن طالَ لَمعَة مِن سَرابِ

And seize the serenity of time, for

And seize the essence of time, for life,

life, however long, is a gleam of a mirage.

However long, is but a mirage.

بَينَ أَرضٍ مَبسوطَةٍ مِن رِياضٍ

بَينَ أَرضٍ مَبسوطَةٍ مِن رِياضٍ

وَسَماءٍ مَرفوعَةٍ مِن سَحابِ

وَسَماءٍ مَرفوعَةٍ مِن سَحابِ

Between an earth spread with gardens

Between an outstretched earth of gardens,

and a sky of clouds raised high,

And a raised sky of clouds,

وَقيانٍ مِنَ الحَمامِ تُغَنّي

وَقيانٍ مِنَ الحَمامِ تُغَنّي

بِاِتِّفاقٍ في لَحنِها وَاِصطِحابِ

بِاِتِّفاقٍ في لَحنِها وَاِصطِحابِ

and songstresses among the doves, singing

And doves cooing melodiously,

in harmony in their song and in companionship,

In harmony and company.

وَنَديمٍ صافٍ عَلى كَدَرِ الدَه

وَنَديمٍ صافٍ عَلى كَدَرِ الدَه

رِ سَليمٍ مِن شُبهَةٍ وَاِرتِيابِ

رِ سَليمٍ مِن شُبهَةٍ وَاِرتِيابِ

and a boon companion, pure despite the murk of time,

And a pure companion above the turbidity of time,

free of suspicion and doubt.

Free from any doubt or suspicion.

لَم تُعَنِّفهُ بِالمَلامِ وَشَرُّ ال

لَم تُعَنِّفهُ بِالمَلامِ وَشَرُّ ال

وُدِّ وُدُّ مُستَحدَث بِعِتابِ

وُدِّ وُدُّ مُستَحدَث بِعِتابِ

You have not chastised him with blame; and the worst

Do not rebuke him with blame, and the worst affection

affection is affection newly born of reproach.

Is newly created with reproach.

جَرِّبِ الناسَ فَالصَديقُ قَليلُ

جَرِّبِ الناسَ فَالصَديقُ قَليلُ

فيهِمُ وَالقُلوبُ ذاتُ اِنقِلابِ

فيهِمُ وَالقُلوبُ ذاتُ اِنقِلابِ

Test people, for friends are few

Try people, for the loyal friend is rare among them,

among them, and hearts are given to change.

And hearts are changeable.
