فعالجنَ أشجانا يكاثرن عالجا
They recalled a memory, or stirred burning longings;
Do memories awaken, kindling passions anew,
And grappled with sorrows that rival ʿAlij’s sands in number—
As our sorrows multiply, seeking remedy?

Riding-camels that traveled between al-ʿUdhayb and Bariq,
My companions rode between al-‘Udhayb and lightning,
Swift she-camels, striding quickly through those mountain passes.
Yearnings in those valleys awakening passions.

They made for stopping-places in Wadi al-Arak,
From Wadi al-Arak they surveyed dwellings,
And crossed the shimmering mirage in al-Arak’s temperate air.
Then folded up their tents in al-Arak like reptiles.

Longing is their camel-driver; and if they falter,
For them intense longing is like a sharp blade; if it bends
Drivers echo yearning in lilting chants.
Keenness returns the yearning ever more intense.

Ah, may my father ransom those riding-camels when they travel,
By my father! Those riders when they sped away
Leading the way, filling the wilderness with howdahs.
Valleys filled with their love made the wilderness teem.

You see them as camel riders, though when they sped off
Toiling silhouettes upon those traces of old camps.
They were shades upon those shades ever fickle.

In Mina they have the loftiest hopes; and beside al-Safa,
For them the most felicitous wish at Mina, and at Al-Safa
They seek paths from the people of purity.
They hope from the noble folk right direction.

Circling the House of lofty aspirations raised them high,
An eager pilgrim circuits the House, so I saw
Showing them domes of eminence and stairways of ascent.
Them as domes of enlightenment and steps of ascent.

So they exposed the wounds that had lain hidden,
Then from the rocky trails they brought out what was hidden
And scattered tears—nay, sobbing hearts.
And shed copious tears, nay overflowing hearts.

The Corner from every mountain pass, step by step.
The Corner from all sides, thronging its precincts.

By kissing the wall and pressing their lips to it, they fulfilled
Fulfilling their duty by kissing and touching the wall,
Obligations through which the souls’ needs are met.
Rites that for souls fulfill their greatest needs.

As they embraced those places, their wrists were encircled
Bracelets upon their right hands, and armlets.
By its sincere faith like bangles and bracelets.

To God belong those riders who headed toward Mecca;
By God, a band made for Mecca!
They were truly noble in purpose and lofty in stature.
They were graced by their purpose and hallowed their pilgrimage.

They knelt their camels at hope’s bounds and rested for the night,
They camped in hope’s dominion and held wedding feasts,
And by morning every chooser of a lot-arrow was a winner.
And each rivaled the other passing the wine-cup.

Glad tidings for them! How many honors they were granted,
Good tidings to them! How much honor they gained,
And those were fruits of what they had offered before.
Matching what they offered up before and its yield.

The vanguard gained distinction, but others—

Among mankind they wandered confused, distraught.

Setting out toward God and the veiled House.
That I see God and the Hidden House beyond reach?

The paths have all but excluded him,
So on no path does he meet one journeying toward God.
No road where the seeker can find a guide.

He plunges into seas of sin unafraid,
Yet is struck senseless with terror at seeing the sea raging.
Though terror seizes him if he but sees the surging deeps.

Cowardly when shunning right guidance, but bold
Appears to him, he becomes the bold troublemaker.

But my heart has seen only the night as it settled.
While my heart discerns only night’s darkness as it recedes.

The Prophet’s tomb will waft its perfume to me.
