دمعٌ بنيران الضلوع يصعّد

هذا يسحُّ وهذه لا تخمد
Tears are driven upward by the fires within the ribs;
Tears like fire rise from my ribs
the tears pour down, and the fires do not die out.
This one washes away while that does not fade

نفد التصبر والأسى لا ينفَد
And grief—whenever patience vies with its anguish,
And sorrow, when patience wrestles with its affliction
the effort to endure runs out, but grief does not.
Patience runs out but sorrow does not

O you who blame me for grieving, woe to you—do not blame me!
O you who blame me for grief, do not blame
For grief is praiseworthy in some circumstances.
For in some situations, grief is praised

At the loss of loved ones, there is no stoic endurance;
Losing loved ones, one cannot be stoic
is stoic endurance fitting at the loss of souls?
Is stoicism acceptable when souls are lost?

I had at first borne the calamity patiently,
At first, I was patient with calamity
but a grief-stricken heart denied me patience.
But patience refused my seared heart

Indeed, I marvel at one who remains patient though bereaved:
I wonder at one stoic yet bereaved
do you think his heart is iron or hard stone?
Is his heart iron or frozen?

That hardness—I do not say it is
Such harshness I cannot call
patience endorsed by the forbearing, most judicious man.
Patience, as the wise and guided say

جزعاً لفقدهم المباركُ أحمدُ
If that were so, he would not have wept for his loved ones,
If it were so, he would not have wept
in anguish at their loss—the blessed Ahmad.
With anguish for their loss, blessed Ahmed

ونقول ما نُرضي الإله فنسعدُ
We weep tears of compassion, as he wept,
We cry with merciful tears like his
and we say what pleases God, and so find happiness.
And say what satisfies God and brings bliss
