رعاك الله ذا الأجر الجزيل

على فقدان مكفول الخليلِ

for the loss of al-Khalil's ward.

مضى لك فاتحاً باباً لدار ال

سلام ورؤيةِ الرَّب الجليل

سلام ورؤيةِ الرَّب الجليل

He passed on, opening for you a gate to the abode of

He has departed, opening for you the door

peace and the vision of the majestic Lord,

To the abode of peace and the sight of the Majestic Lord

كما قد جاء أبقاك الإله السـ

كما قد جاء أبقاك الإله السـ

ـنين كما تشاءُ عن الرسول

ـنين كما تشاءُ عن الرسول

as has been reported—may God preserve you for the

For all things fade like dew and passion

على من كانَ لو كان العزاء الـ

ـمُفدّى بالخطير وبالمنيل

Over one who, were consolation possible, would have been the

one ransomed with the eminent and the generous.

Redeemable by the precious and the priceless

فقد شمل الجميعَ شمولَ حزن

فقد شمل الجميعَ شمولَ حزن

نصيرُ به عليه بلا شمول

نصيرُ به عليه بلا شمول

For it has enveloped everyone in all-encompassing grief,

Then it would have embraced all

leaving us distraught over him, without wine.

As a sincere comforter embraces without reserve

فيارَ مساً حوى نجماً منيراً

فيارَ مساً حوى نجماً منيراً

سقاك الله صوبَ السّلسبيل

سقاك الله صوبَ السّلسبيل

So, O grave that has enclosed a radiant star,

So farewell a starry night that harbored

may God water you with Salsabil's downpour.

A shining star - may God give you clear waters to drink

فما وأبيك بعدك غير طَرف

فما وأبيك بعدك غير طَرف

كليلٍ للرّدى طرفٍ كحيل

كليلٍ للرّدى طرفٍ كحيل

For, by your father, after you there is nothing but an eye

سنقضي حق فقدِك ما بقينا

بدمع ساجم شافي الغليل

We shall fulfill the duty of mourning you as long as we live,

We will fulfill the right of your loss as long as we live

with streaming tears that soothe burning anguish.

With copious, healing tears

وحسبك يا أبا عمرٍ بما في الـ

ـجنان عزا على الصبر الجميل

ـجنان عزا على الصبر الجميل

And sufficient for you, O Abu Amr, is what lies in the

And it suffices you, O Abu Umar, what the

gardens, as consolation for beautiful patience.

Gardens hold as solace for beautiful patience

وإن بني البسيطةِ كيفما هم

وإن بني البسيطةِ كيفما هم

سبيلهمُ إلى هذا السبيل

سبيلهمُ إلى هذا السبيل

And indeed the children of the earth, whatever their state,

And however the Bani Basitah are

their path leads to this path.

Their way is this way

فدمْ من بعد من أبكى البرايا

فدمْ من بعد من أبكى البرايا

قريرَ العين ذا عمر طويل

قريرَ العين ذا عمر طويل

So live on after the one who made creation weep,

He who wept the ruins after

with peaceful eyes and a long life.

The cheerful-eyed one of lengthy life
