أَبشِر بِحَربٍ تُغِصُّ الشَيخَ بِالريقِ
Tell Ibn Kulthum, who acts on his pledged word:
Rejoice in a war that makes the old man choke on his spittle,
وَصاحِبَيهِand his two companions فَلاso may not يَنعَمbe pleasant صَباحُهُماthe morning of them both
وَصاحِبَيهِ فَلا يَنعَم صَباحُهُما
إِذwhen فُرَّتِwas laid bare الحَربُwar عِنfrom أَنيابِهاits fangs الروقِlong and projecting
إِذ فُرَّتِ الحَربُ عِن أَنيابِها الروقِ
and tell his two companions: may their morning bring no joy,
when war’s long, jutting fangs are bared.

مِنَ المَعالي وَقومٌ بِالمَفاريقِ
He sends out the caravan only after a true onslaught
from the heights, with men at the crossroads.

But do you see women in howdahs departing, urged onward with song,
with followers behind them and a driver none outstrips?

They take a pass from Muʿẓam through Mus-hilah,
a slippery way to its crest from the heights of al-Busr.

They fought Maʿadd there and took refuge in it,
when faith became a faith that could not be trusted.
