Tell Abu Khulayd, Wa'il, there with you,

that today I saw something astonishing:

Ibn Ja'da is away at pasture in al-Buwayn,

while the sons of Khafaja hunt the fox.

    وَغَضِبتُ لَو أَنّي أَرى لِيَ مَغضَبا

    I felt affronted by what I had seen, and it distressed me;

and I grew angry—if only I could find an outlet for my anger!

Yet I do see another clan there,

among those who camp on grassy al-Amil.

    وَإِذا هُمُ شَرِبوا دُعيتُ لِأَشرَبا

    Among them I do not cower in fear;

and when they drink, I am invited to drink.

And when they play at their accustomed times,

I do not retire for the night until I too have played.

And a household singer spends the night answering another like herself,

a pampered young maiden, and playing a lute,

among brothers who combine bounty and generosity,

    lean-bellied when winter's hardship swells.

You see their fine robes fastened with pins,

while they have clothed their Mashrafi swords in gold.

Amr ibn Marthad, noble in his deeds,

and his sons—noble himself, he begot noble sons.

You see them, flowing sweat covering their skins,

jesting as they are served pure, tawny wine.

Their generosity and the abundance of their wealth have overcome

the hardships of evil times, until they pass away.

You see whoever comes to them seeking their bounty

given gifts, and hoping for a mount from them:

a pale she-camel with her calf, and a fully mature camel-stallion,

or a mature steed like a cudgel, tall and long-bodied,

or a mature, bounding mare, like a spearshaft,

    broad-mouthed, outstripping the self-assured, white-flanked wild ass.
