May good fortune, blessing, and success be yours!
Congratulations on your prosperity, auspiciousness, and success!
Indeed, God's help and conquest came when you came.
Indeed, God's victory has come with your arrival and the conquest.

God decreed that you strive to revive His religion,
God has decreed that you strive to revive His religion,
doing what neither sword nor spear can do.
Accomplishing what cannot be done by sword or spear.

He has ordained that you wear yourself out before all people
of your excellent inward nature and your gentle judgments,
With your excellent character and esteemed views.

and that victory's ground among the foes be claimed
An ally for Islam has assumed the position of victory over the enemy,
by a guardian of Islam, trusted and generous.
One who is devoted to safeguarding it, trustworthy and tolerant.

He prospered your intentions and set your judgment right,
So may He facilitate your every intention and steady your vision,
made easy what you undertake, and brought near what you seek.
Make easy your every deed and bring near your every goal.

Alfonso targeted you with treachery, striking
Adonsh intended to strike with treachery, igniting
the flints of strife; their striking did not aid him.
The sparks of incitement, but incitement availed him not.

And with bright Indian swords he exposed the egg of his realm;
He revealed the egg of his kingdom in India’s ivory,
its shell was torn away and its yolk swallowed.
So it was shattered and its yolk spilled forth.

He came amid Roman hosts intending, so they claimed,
He came against Andalusia with hordes of Romans, intending, in his claim,
to sweep al-Andalus away; instead, they were swept away there.
To kick it down, but it was he who received the kick.

With forces like pebbles in number, like meteors in armament,
As numerous as pebbles, as abundant as shooting stars,
the plain, the hollow, and the slope dwindled before them.
They were diminished before the torrent, abyss, and mountainside.

وَبَأوُهُمُ صُغرٌ وَزأرُهُمُ نَبّحُ
The Champion of the Faith loomed over them, and they turned back,
The defender of the faith appeared before them, so they recoiled,
their pride reduced to abasement, their roaring to barking.
Whimpering, their howling that of yelping dogs.

And mountains of theirs fell, with which they had rammed
Mountains of them collapsed when they collided with
his resolve head-on; that collision laid them low.
His resolute onslaught, so they were gored by the goring.

Did good tidings come? Did kindness abound?”

Were blessings returned? Did wounds heal?"

Did that sore not heal that very moment?
Did that ulcer not swiftly scar over?"

You wrote lines of conjecture on the parchment of the open waste;
You traced out presumptions in vanishing ink,
but what you retained of them and what you erased betrayed you.
So what you affirmed and erased both betrayed you.

And short of your hopes, you encountered a caliph
Instead of vain hopes, you met their antithesis:
whose intuition is revelation, whose resolve a flash.
His insight is revelation, his will decisive lightning flashes.

Behold, he is the king who never advanced toward
Behold, he is the king who, in pursuit of any aspiration,
any hoped-for goal without success keeping pace with him.
Was accompanied by success at every step.

Sea and land fight on his behalf against whoever rebels,
Hot wind and pelting rain fight those who disobey him,
and wind and sunlight wage war for him in the clash.
While soft breeze and bright sun assist his raids.

War has already taught you your worth before him;
War has shown you your standing with him;
after seeing for yourself, there is no room for earnestness or jest.
After witnessing, there is no more jesting or foolery.

أهَيجَاؤُهُ أشهَى إلَيكَ أمِ الصُّلحُ
So what do you think, after acknowledgment and experience:
How then, after admitting and knowing this,
is his warfare sweeter to you, or peace?
Do you see incitement as more alluring than making peace?

In a thicket where neither lost nor grazing cattle venture,

you fled, night's darkness a full-length coat of mail
You fled while the wings of night were a copious armor upon you
over you; darkness is the fugitive's safest shield.
And the canopy of the fugitive’s stars gave you shelter.

They let you go—not to spare you from death,
Not out of stinginess toward you did they let you go,
but to spare their horses' last breaths.
But because they were sparing of their steeds’ strength.

So you became a fugitive from the caliphate, seeking refuge;
So you became an outcast of the caliphate, finding refuge,
the world closes in on you, and dawn terrifies you.

At the slightest drizzle from the clouds of their vengeance.

You drowned, oblivious of whether they will be forgiving or punish.

And if some further affliction befalls you after this,
from life, that seepage will do it no good.
That shower will not avail to relieve your life.

You set up a market of rebellion in his cities;
You have set up in his cities a market of sedition,
its loss was yours, its profit his.
So its loss was yours while the profit was his.

The shade and coolness of truces made you insolent;
The shadow of the Hudun blinded and chilled you,
the heat and scorching blast of battles disciplined you.
So the heat of fierce combat disciplined you with burning.

You surged recklessly to attack the frontier,
but the death-owl of your souls wailed before you could advance.
But the echo of your spirits’ groaning preceded your surging.

The Commander of the Faithful attacked you with an army
escorted by victory, with conquest leading it.
Escorted by victory, preceded by conquests.

Within its ranks are nabʿ-wood bows, whose arrows' downpour
In its multitudes is a source for the downpour of its arrows
streams upon the Romans in the gloom of battle-dust.
Upon the Romans in darkness—the havoc-wreaking wine is poured.

The horses trod at their heels in fear
Their steeds walked behind them in dread,
of them; beside them, a gallop seemed like reining in.
As though galloping alongside them would exhaust them.

And bright swords, burnished until all looked alike,
With polished white blades they resembled each other,
so the eye could distinguish neither edge nor flat.
So that neither edge nor side could be distinguished.

So the mail fragments scattered by their probing thrusts lay
The horse armor was strewn upon the ground shredded,
strewn upon the ground like scattered salt.
Like salt scattered.

And brown spears, often dipping into blood,
There was much bloodshed, yet with it they thirsted for more blood,
yet their drinking left them with a raging thirst.
Though drinking only increased their thirst.

So on Wednesday theirs was bitterness
So for them on Wednesday there was the bitterness
from blood—a quenching through spearheads never exposed to the sun.
Of blood irrigating tongues that do not praise.

The horses charged toward them, wary,
The horses charged them while they grimaced,
but were driven back, kicking from the spears' impact.
So they were repelled, and their spears' blows repelled them.

So the house of polytheism gathered up its conceit's trailing hem,
The progeny of polytheism diminished the train of their arrogance,
while the torrent of galloping steeds swept it along.
While the onrush of the thoroughbreds, goaded by it, surged.

The stars of unbelief completely disappeared
before the sun's rays when dawn appeared.
Before the rays of the sun when dawn shone.

And if you beheld him while glimpsing them, then almost
Soon—if you but glimpse it in flashing—
would that glimpse dispel the deep gloom of their darkness.
That gleam will dispel the darkness of their gloom.

But hearts grow blind and cannot see,
But hearts are blinded so they do not see,
and the minds of souls grow still and do not awaken.
And souls’ minds fall silent so they do not awaken.

How ugly are those fallen in battle!
and how fair what that glimpse made possible for us!
How excellent is the prospect shaped for us by that gleam!

from terror; no nursing mother's breast yields a drop.
Their faces red, their voices crying.

فَأوجُهُهَا حُمرٌ وَأصوَاتُهَا بُحُّ
They moan in lament or strike their eye-sockets;
So fear the Trustee of God in peace and war;
their faces are red, their voices hoarse.
Steer the remnants of treachery away from him.
فَخَافُواso fear أمِينَthe trustee اللهِof God فِيin السِّلمِpeace وَالوَغَىand battle

وَنحّوا بَقايَا الغَدرِ عَن صَوبِهِ نَحّوا
So fear God's trustee in peace and battle,
You have no independence from obeying him,
and banish the remnants of treachery from his path—banish them!
Nor in the sea of his dominion can you swim.

You cannot dispense with offering him obedience,
The rituals of the true religion are clear through him;
nor can you swim in the sea of his might.
No other true ritual exists but his sacrifices.

Through him the rites of the true faith are clear;
The festivals of this opening are brilliant, so no
apart from him there is no true worship or sacrifice.
Monasteries’ celebrations follow them, nor Easter.

O delegation, enter the presence of approval!
monastery's Palm Sunday, nor Easter, follows them.
Abundant blessings and gifts will inundate you!

Hear, O delegation: enter the court of favor;
Greet an Imam whose traits include wisdom,
blessings will overflow for you and gifts engulf you.
Kindness, forbearance, and pardon.

وَمِن عَادِهِ الإِحسَانُ وَالحِلمُ وَالصَّفحُ
Greet an imam whose qualities include wisdom,
A truthful successor, born of predecessors,
whose habit is kindness, forbearance, and pardon.
whose mention spreads fragrance whenever they are recalled.

لِمِسكِ ثَناهُم كُلَّمَا ذُكِرُوا نَفحُ
A true caliph, begotten by caliphs,
The horizons shone with good tidings through him and were illuminated,
the musk of whose praise wafts whenever they are named.
So they came to dwell in light, and light became more lucid.
أنَارَتshone بِهِthrough him الآفَاقُthe horizons بِشراًُwith joy وَنَوَّرَتand flowered

فَأمسَوا بِهَا فِي النّورِ وَالنُّورُ أوضحُ
Through him the horizons shone with joy and flowered;
May prosperity inclusive of him endure,
so they came to dwell there amid blossoms, with light clearer still.
And may blessings continue to tend toward his inclinations!
فَدَامَتso may endure لَهُfor him النَّعمَاءُblessings شامِلَةًall-embracing بِهِthrough him
فَدَامَت لَهُ النَّعمَاءُ شامِلَةً بِهِ

ولا بَرِحَت تَنحو المَقَادِيرُ مَا يَنحُو
May blessings endure for him, all-embracing through him,
Had he not prohibited, the world would have had no prohibitions,
and may destiny never cease to pursue what he pursues.
And had he not guided, the guides would have achieved no feats.
فَلَولاfor were it not for نُهاهُhis wisdom لَمnot يَكُنwould there be لِلوَرَىfor mankind نُهىًwisdom
فَلَولا نُهاهُ لَم يَكُن لِلوَرَى نُهىً

وَلَولا هُدَاهُ لَم يَفُز لِلهُدَى قِدحُ
For without his wisdom, mankind would have no wisdom,
So may his blessings last, encompassing him,
and without his guidance, guidance's lot-arrow would not win.
And may the divine decrees never cease tending as he tends!
