وَعلَىand upon الفُؤَادِthe heart لَوَاعِجٌburning pangs مُذsince غِبتُمُyou went away
وَعلَى الفُؤَادِ لَوَاعِجٌ مُذ غِبتُمُ
تَقِدُkindle الضُّلوعَthe ribs تَوَقُّداًburning وَوَجِيبَاand throbbing
تَقِدُ الضُّلوعَ تَوَقُّداً وَوَجِيبَا
And upon the heart lie burning pangs since you went away,
And since you left my heart has known great turmoil
Setting the ribs burning and throbbing.
It sets my ribs aflame with yearning and with grief
فَلَهاso they have خُفوقٌfluttering هَلquestion particle بَصُرتَyou caught sight بِبَارِقٍof a lightning flash
فَلَها خُفوقٌ هَل بَصُرتَ بِبَارِقٍ
وَلَهَاand they have حَنِينٌa yearning cry هَلquestion particle سَمِعتَyou heard النّيِبَاthe aged she-camels
وَلَهَا حَنِينٌ هَل سَمِعتَ النّيِبَا
So they flutter—have you seen a flash of lightning?
So it now throbs and flickers. Have you seen the lightning?
And they cry with longing—have you heard the aged she-camels?
And it now moans and whimpers. Have you heard the rain?
