A moon has risen, and the air is his sky.

His splendor has filled eyes and souls.

His passage and resting place quake before him.

And what lies before and behind him is too narrow to contain him.

And his beauty all but steals thoughts away.

And his radiance all but snatches eyes away.

And when the crescents are reproached for waning,

His fullness and growth delight and increase.

His movements and stillness yearn for him.

Let Valencia glory in her lord, whose

Defense and prowess have guarded the frontiers.

The frontier is charmed and cured of the foes' affliction

By his coming, then his protective presence and his call.

A land that holds him glories in him, for

His radiance dispels the deep darkness of its night.

So his qualities become clear throughout its regions,

And his blessings overflow throughout its reaches.

    تُغنِيهِ عن أسوَارِهِ آراؤُهُ

    And one granted aid extends victory's rampart there;

His counsels spare it the need of its walls.

A generous giver, he grants the choicest gifts to his petitioners,

As though they were his partners in his wealth.

O son of the two imams, to whom

Glory's lineage and allegiance are ascribed,

Who both planted its banners upon right guidance,

    Until its straight course and level path became clear;

And brother of the imam, God's caliph, who

Delivered to him what his caliphs had guarded.

His justice embraced all creation, and abundant

For their rich and poor was his radiance.

The guarantors of truth's victory are its allies,

And defenders of its realm, and they are its trustees.

The sons of Ishmael: among them its covenant

Endures, and true are its promise and its fulfillment.

Of Qays Aylan—and what can tell you what

Qays is: the light of the faith of guidance, and its glory.

They reared it as it grew, so they are its fathers,

And tended it in maturity, so they are its sons.

And upon them, until Resurrection, rests its defense,

And with them are its banners and its standard.

And they are the ones who fight its foes,

Until its enemies bow before its might.

And they restored its spirit after

Its last spark of life had hovered on life's brink.

So faith has its crown bound upon it

In honor, and its mantle hangs down upon it.

And the pillars of God's oneness are lofty in structure,

While polytheism's edifice has plunged and collapsed.

The enemy himself and his land, or his defeat,

You seek—not the enemy's livestock and sheep.

    وَإِذَا تأَبّى فَالإِبَاءُ شَقَاؤُهُ

    If he obeys you, then you are his good fortune;

And if he refuses, refusal is his misery.

And you have his cure in the Mashrafi sword,

However persistently his disease continues in error.

The multitude of his great and small deludes him,

And his rabble sustains him in his error.

Far from it! He cannot thereby turn your resolve,

For the torrent's scum is the least of its concerns.

Can he bar God's decree from you in what

He chooses and wills for your triumph?

Your respite let out for him the tether of hopes,

So that its slackening might bring him back from his folly.

But his obstinacy cast him into a deep sea,

And his passions hurled him down from a lofty height.

You granted him respite till his day, and for you became

A spy upon him—his morning and his evening.

And indeed we terrify the harm and vicissitudes of calamities,

Through you, with the terror of an Indian blade whose edge is honed.

And we say to the world in a voice that reaches

Your glory's ears with its words and prayer:

Guard Abu Yahya for us, and be honored

By meeting him, as long as he remains within you.

May the festival that adorned your palace gladden you, bringing

A delegation of glad tidings with its coming and encounter.

And here it is for you, from a grateful, wholly bound slave,

Whose praise and commendation of you never cease.

He offered this page of verse, and wished

That his soul were there in place of its lines.
