You sang, O son of al-Hurr, alone and secluded,

with a drunken man's words, or worthless speech.

Do you recall a people whose spears hurt you,

and who defended their ancestral honor in the thick of battle?

And you weep for what Rabi'ah suffered at their hands,

yet you have no high standing in Bakr's noble lineage.

Why, then, did you not seek vengeance for Ju'fi's blood-debts,

while your own clan was lowly in years gone by?

We left them abased on the day of al-Thari,

seeking refuge from our swords among the acacias.

And he engaged you on the day of al-Nakhil with his host—

Umayr—and you took no joy in meeting him.

And on the day of Sharahil we cut off your noses,

and that day was not unjust to us.

We struck the parting of his hair with the sword's edge,

while he had only lately been with the women who combed his hair.

So if that rubbed a nose of Madhhij in the dust,

then abasement and wrath upon those resentful noses!
