O Layla's dwelling at Ublayy and Dhu Husam,

and by al-Quff's flank, with its flatlands, and the hills!

Indeed, we speak, while God decrees in His might:

Whatever good our Lord sustains shall endure.

Yazid, son of Abu Sufyan, do you aspire

to praise and glory that never end?

Resolve firmly upon a course whose outcome is sound,

before death, and cut short the words of gossip.

Give due regard to the one who tells you, 'Take it, Yazid,' then say,

'Take it, Mu'awiya; do not falter or lay blame.'

Indeed, if the caliphate is acknowledged for the third of you,

its ranks will stand firm among you and never depart.

And delegations will ever be in your dwellings,

visiting a radiant-browed man, foremost in generosity.

He holds the reins of Quraysh's affairs without wavering,

even if every rutting camel-stallion among them rises up.

Live, keeping yourselves on guard against the world,

and ready the troops of Syria's people for dire ordeals.

    إِنَّي أخافُ عليكم حسرةَ النَّدمِ

    And do not lodge it anywhere but in your own abode;

indeed, I fear for you the anguish of regret.

And God has given provisions in due measure,

even if He calls you to account for sustenance and food allotments.

Nor is there deliberation for anyone who asks you for consultation,

except through thrusts and well-aimed, cleaving blows.

How could they have a council, when they have killed

Uthman—sacrificed him in the sacred months?

The best of creation—they appalled the Muslims by what they did to him,

hacked apart, his garments stained with blood.

And his killer among you, in bringing about his death, was

like al-Uhaymir when he brought destruction upon Iram,

or like al-Duhaym—and she was no blessing—

who brought her people a thousand bridles.

My soul be ransom for the youth who pressed them close in war,

until they drew near, and he kept the people occupied with peace.

And may God bless the earth that enfolded

his limbs, and may the earliest steady rains water it.
