O Ibn al-Zubayr, Commander of the Faithful, has not

Word reached you of what the officials have done in office?

They sold the merchants the land's grain and divided

The substance of the land tax, greedily, as though dividing spoils.

    And they sent you a lying, feeble old man;

Whatever a lying old man might say to you, he will say.

And in you is a seeker of justice, firm of resolve,

Stout in strength, neither slack nor dependent on others.

Take a firm hold of Zayd, if you catch him,

And relieve the widows of the dung beetle's ball.

We have been afflicted with a spiny-tailed lizard of Banu Khalaf,

Who regards treachery as drinking water with honey.

Seize al-Usayfir, the little sparrow, and pluck his fledgling's feathers,

Until he staggers under misery after his youthful prime.

Nor is Attab's trustworthiness so sound

That it has no flaw; rather, it is full of byways.

And Qays of Kinda's governorship has lasted long,

At the land's navel, between plain and mountain.

    And seize Hujayr, then subject him to an accounting;

Even if you excuse others, do not excuse Banu Qufal.

Nothing about them aroused my suspicion except their rise

To khabis sweetmeats, away from fish relish and onions.

Nor is a youth overseeing land at Salimah

Like one who campaigned in Dastaba without taking a fee.

The land tax is gathered for him as he reclines,

Scoffing in the courtyard of the lightly clad singing girl.

    And al-Walibi, whom Mihran appointed—

Mihran departed disgraced, but he remained.

And take Ibn Abi Ashsh and his companion,

Qayl al-Sabi': he has run his course at leisure.

And Munqidh ibn Tarif, of Banu Asad—

I was told their official has gone off with a heavy load.

Nor is Ukhaynis of Ju'fi kept back

From possessions by night prayer with the long surahs.

    And al-Darimi—safflower dye circles him

On a moustache, exchanged for tending camels.

And two other officials have in their possession

Some obtainable wealth; handle it gently, and you will get it:

Muhammad ibn Umayr, and the man let down

By Bakr on the morning of terror and alarm.

Nor is Furat, though called a pious man,

If he gains anything, so fearful and anxious.

And al-Harithi will agree to share with you,

If you overlook his earlier deeds.

And summon the Aqari', then strike them with disaster,

And load Mas'ud's treachery upon a camel.

    فأصبحوا اليوم أهلَ الخيلِ والإِبلِ

    They had come to us as men without riding camels;

Today they have become owners of horses and camels.

They will not make amends to you until their heads suffer

The whips' blows, followed by binding in fetters.

Indeed, when the whips bite their withers,

They reveal hoards of wealth and robes.
