Ibn Mutiʿ called for allegiance, so I came to him,
Ibn Muti' called to the seller, so I came to him
for a pledge of allegiance unfamiliar to my heart.
To the allegiance of my heart, of which he was unaware
فأخرجso he held out ليto me خَشناءa rough hand حيثwhen لمستهاI touched it
منamong الخشنthe rough hands ليستit is not منamong أكفِّthe palms of الخلائفthe caliphs
He held out a rough hand to me; when I touched it,
So he brought out to me a coarse one, when I touched it
it was among the coarse hands, not the palms of caliphs.
It was so coarse, it was not from the palms of gentle ones

Of the scattered, short-fingered sort—I found its touch strange,
From the scattered wrinkles, I denied its touch
and it was not among the fair, long-fingered, delicate hands.
It was not of the smooth white hands of gentle maidens

Accustomed to wielding clubs for its people,
Repeatedly striking the stones against each other
so they were driven back when the day of sword-fighting came.
So they returned it, when it was the day of bartering

When I pledged allegiance to him, he did not name who my caliph was,
He did not specify, when I swore allegiance to him, my successor
and he imposed no terms except a reckless man's terms.
Nor did he impose any condition, save the condition of the gambler
