اصبر يزيد فقد فارقت ذا ثقةٍ

اصبر يزيد فقد فارقت ذا ثقةٍ

واشكر بلاء الذي بالودّ أصفاكا

واشكر بلاء الذي بالودّ أصفاكا

Be patient, Yazid, for you have parted from a trustworthy man.

Have patience, Yazid, for you have lost one of great trust

And give thanks for the kindness of him who favored you with love.

And be thankful for the trial which has purified you

أصبحت تملك هذا الخلق كلهم

أصبحت تملك هذا الخلق كلهم

فأنت ترعاهم والله يرعاكا

فأنت ترعاهم والله يرعاكا

You have come to rule all these people.

You have come to possess all of these people

So you tend them, and God tends you.

So take care of them and God will take care of you

فإِن رزي أحدٌ في الناس نعلمه

فإِن رزي أحدٌ في الناس نعلمه

كما رزئت ولا عقبى كعقباكا

كما رزئت ولا عقبى كعقباكا

For no one we know among the people has been bereaved

If anyone among the people is stricken with grief, we will console him

as you have, nor is any recompense like yours.

Just as you were consoled, and no consequence is like yours

وفي معاوية الباقي لنا خلف

وفي معاوية الباقي لنا خلف

إِذا نُعيت ولا نسمع بمنعاكا

إِذا نُعيت ولا نسمع بمنعاكا

And in Muawiya, who remains, we have a successor

And in Muawiyah who remains for us is a successor

when your death is announced—may we never hear news of your death.

When you are mourned we will not hear of your prevention
