They say to me, “Why not rise to the heights?

For the life of the patient, contented man has no sweetness.

And why not saddle the pale camels until you settle them

in Egypt, in the shade of the exalted court?

For among its notables is one whose palm pours forth

a torrent that, if he wishes, waters every barren waste.

And there are judges there who know full well

that learning must not go to waste.

And there are elders of religion and excellence, and those

to whom every finger points as men of eminence.

And there is this, and there is that—and humiliation is abasement.

So rise, strive, seek the door of your livelihood, and knock.”

I said, “Yes, I will strive if I wish to be seen

lowly, humiliated, my standing held in contempt.

And I will strive if I take pleasure in standing long

at the door of one screened from visitors, unapproachable.

And I will strive if hypocrisy is my way,

going out evening and morning in robes of affectation.

And I will strive if no remnant remains within me

with which to uphold the claims of piety and scrupulous restraint.

For many are the gatherings among men of high rank

where ghada-wood fire blazes between my ribs.

And many a time, among masters of learning and its practitioners,

when they discuss difficult questions in an assembly,

a debate inflames souls and ends—

once they have entered it—at the worst watering place:

in folly that debases the standing of its practitioners,

or in silence over a truth neglected there.

So one either seeks the path of religion and reason,

or endures the choking pang of one who swallows.”
