The meanings of your beauty were precise in my thoughts,

for the slanderer's gaze and the keen observer's understanding.

Away from the gaze of slanderers and understanding of critics.

لله أيام مضت لي بكم

لله أيام مضت لي بكم

بين رُبَى نَجد و تلك البطاحْ

بين رُبَى نَجد و تلك البطاحْ

How wondrous the days I spent with you,

Oh days that have passed with you!

between the hills of Najd and those valley flats!

Between the dunes of Najd and those plains.

أيامُ وَصْل نلتُ فيها الذي

أيامُ وَصْل نلتُ فيها الذي

أهوى و أكثرت من الاقتراحْ

أهوى و أكثرت من الاقتراحْ

Days of union, when I attained what

Days of unity in which I got what I love,

I desire, and made request upon request.

And made many proposals.

و قد بَقيت اليوم من بعدها

و قد بَقيت اليوم من بعدها

كطائر قد قُصَّ منه الجناحْ

كطائر قد قُصَّ منه الجناحْ

And today, after them, I am left

Today I remain after them,

like a bird whose wing has been clipped.

Like a bird whose wings are clipped.

ما قُوتٌ من قد طار من وكره

ما قُوتٌ من قد طار من وكره

ولا على من سلا فاستراحْ

ولا على من سلا فاستراحْ

What sustenance has one who has flown from his nest?

No strength for one who flew from his nest,

Nor for one who has forgotten and found rest.

Nor for one who rested and took comfort.

أبيتُ أرعى من نجوم الدجَى

أبيتُ أرعى من نجوم الدجَى

أسيرَ ليل ما له من بَراحْ

أسيرَ ليل ما له من بَراحْ

I spend the night keeping watch among the stars of darkness,

I refused to graze among the stars of nightfall,

a captive of a night from which there is no escape.

A captive of a night that has no serenity.

علمت يا ظالمُ بعد اللقَا

علمت يا ظالمُ بعد اللقَا

و قسوة القلب حِيالً الصباحْ

و قسوة القلب حِيالً الصباحْ

I learned, O cruel one, the remoteness of reunion,

You knew, oh oppressor, after meeting

and the heart's hardness in the face of morning.

And the hardness of heart towards dawn.
