ألا أن نبت الكرم أغلى مهرَها

ألا أن نبت الكرم أغلى مهرَها

فيا خُسرَ من أضحى لذلك باذلا

فيا خُسرَ من أضحى لذلك باذلا

Take heed: the vine’s yield has set her bride-price high.

So what a loss for whoever comes to pay it!

تُزَوَّجُ بالعقل المكرَّم عاجلاً

تُزَوَّجُ بالعقل المكرَّم عاجلاً

وبالنار والغسلين والمهْلِ آجلاَ

وبالنار والغسلين والمهْلِ آجلاَ

She is wed at the cost of honored reason now,

And of fire, pus, and molten metal hereafter.
