O traveler toward the Hijaz, girded for the journey,

strive—may I be your ransom—in travel and night marching.

Armor yourself with beautiful patience, and do not be

    remiss in seeking deep-rooted glory.

And if you keep vigil at night in pursuit of eminence,

beware, then beware, of slumber's wiles.

repeat to them the remembrance of the Beloved.

And stir in them the secret of wine, for they

through remembrance will not relent until they grow drunk.

And if the paths of travel vanish, and

their shapes leave the keen-sighted gaze bewildered,

then the destination is where the light shines brilliantly,

and the roads lie where you see the earth perfumed.

Stop at the dwellings and watering places, from

the valley of Quba to the sanctuary of Umm al-Qura.

seeking honor, your cheeks in the dust of the earth.

spread over the horizons a light that illumined them,

since you first existed in times past—nor will their like be seen.

Gabriel, bearing tidings from the Lord of heaven!

I would ransom beauty, receiving and imparting its impress.

and nearby reaches, now a desert-dweller, now a townsman.

revealed to us the meaning of perfection embodied.

A secret whose essence we understood: it was not obscure,

that we should doubt it, nor slight enough to be explained.

And indeed I say, when the stars shine

and rise to the utmost heights of glory:

No boasting, bright stars, for Muhammad

is loftier in eminence than they, and brighter in essence.

a master of knowledge and hearts, who then gave them life.

world worthy of his listening to or looking upon.

the One who created and fashioned him praised it.

and leaves even the great sin belittled.

And gifts for which expectation comes, stretched

to its utmost, then returns from him finding its reach too short.

and reached Caesar despite his distant abode.

And wondrous gentleness of character, surpassing

before whose fierce force the lions of al-Shara bow.

is a longing whose slightest part is too great to tell.
